if the plural of cactus is cacti then the plural of compass shouldn't be compasses but compi, amirite?
by Anonymous14 years ago
Actually you put "I" if the word had "us" as in octopus is octupi but compass is compasses

The reason why -us becomes -i is because it's from latin, and in latin, the plural of -us is -i. Compasses, however, does not come from latin.

When has philology ever been logical?
by Anonymous14 years ago
Once I had a substitute that said "ALRIGHT STUDENTS GET OUT YOUR COMPI" loudly and confidently, and we could not stop laughing for the rest of the class.

that makes so logical sense.
by Anonymous14 years ago
No, because the end of the word compass is 'ass', and the plural of 'ass' is 'asses' as in: A lot of asses post stupid questions on this site, amirite?
