If you hang the United States flag upside down it's a sign of distress, or it's a sign of protest. I'm not completely certain.

Ohh, I'm an idiot. I thought OP was referring to the Union, as in the United States. When I hear "union" I think of the U.S. during the American Civil War.

The Union was the Northern side of the US in the US during the Civil war, so you're not wrong. The flag had a horizontal line, a vertical line, and two diagonal lines going opposite ways so it would be the same upside down.
