Well I read it in this Spongebob history article thingy...anyway, the earlier episodes are really suggestive what with the names and all but kids didn't get the jokes, started to like it, and it became a kids cartoon too.

Originally it was supposed to be an adult show where Patrick and Spongebob were like gay lovers or something but Nickelodeon or someone thought it could be a great kids show so they bought it.

I can't remember where I read it (I'm going to keep looking for it) but I remember reading something that said it started off as the show we all know, and that Adult Swim wanted to make a spin-off series where Spongebob and Patrick were gay lovers. The creator of Spongebob said no way.

There's a spinoff of spongebob some company tried to make as a cartoon called spongebong hemp pants. All of the characters represented some sort of drug, but it was never aired. Advocating drug use and stuff. Its on YouTube though
