+157 The use of the word "aesthetic" as a stand-alone adjective is incorrect. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Being incorrect is my aesthetic.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

This would be a correct usage! As a noun!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I find the usage to be highly aesthetic.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

A quick google shows it can also be an adjective so what're you on about ??

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Language works because it is accepted by the majority. Language evoles and changes over time. Deal with it

Case in point. We just saw a sudden mutation!

Can't barely keep up.

If enough people are stupid, the stupidity becomes the truth.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I hate this too, I totally agree. I understand that language evolves, but I also think the misuse of this word is particularly stupid and annoying.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You can seethe and cope or you can accept that the evolution of language will not always be to your taste and the "misuses" you like seem stupid and annoying to someone else.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

This is true, but some words do have negative effects when they're used irresponsibly. Think about how psychological language like "gaslighting" has been essentially redefined and overused. Yeah change is inevitable but you dont have to give up and be fine with the specific way it's changing.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Sure, but that's not the case here. In fact I believe your point essentially only applies to these very specific medical terms because their erosion has actual effects on prejudice and diagnosis. But anyway, in those cases you can argue against the term on the basis of the harm it causes. In this case the only harm this use of aesthetic causes is annoying some people because it's meaning changed.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Morons always win in the end

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I've never actually seen it used as a standalone adjective.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Sounds like somebody is overeducemated

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm not a language purist. English is already such a bastardized language it's dumb to be one in my opinion. If it's colloquially understood, boom you've evolved English successfully and we move on

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Irregardless, I could care less. *shudders*

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The earliest known use of the phrase "couldn't care less" was in a book describing a character who was so passionate about something that he "couldn't care less if he tried," which, ironically, would make the phrase, "I could care less," actually mean what people intend it to.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Whenever I use the word aesthetic, I always ascribe it to something, like the distinctive visual stylings of certain video games.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

To be honest it's like describing something as smelly. People usually mean something smelly smells bad, and people usually use aesthetic by itself to mean aesthetically pleasing or something that has a good aesthetic. Though I personally wouldn't use aesthetic by itself, it doesn't seem that unnatural, all things considered.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You are correct. Ironically, "aesthetic" in 'reels' or 'tiktoks' is used as a descriptor entirely for the sake of aesthetics. There are idiots out there who think aesthetics are centered entirely in "looking *good*".

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Ironic?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yes. They are using the term "aesthetic" rather than something more relevant like 'glamourous' or 'fancy' (for want of better immediate examples) in order to adjust the appearance, for the approval of the viewer, that they are more linguistically adept. The irony is they are using it wrong.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yeah but in the world of linguistics things do change over time based on accepted social usage

by Anonymous 1 year ago

This is a TikTok thing and a younger person thing. Complaining about how the youngins use slang makes you the proverbial old man shaking his fist, telling the kids to get off his lawn.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Haha for sure!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I see your point, but I also think it's important for people to be precise with their language and it's ok to point out when folks, young or otherwise, are using a word incorrectly... until it becomes popular vernacular, then yes it's the territory or old man shaking his fist. That being said, I don't think aesthetic as a standalone adjective is quite there yet.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I think it has become part of the vernacular for younger folks, that's my point.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Exactly. Everyone under the age of 25 knows what this means and it **is** popular vernacular within the age group.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It makes me want to punch people

by Anonymous 1 year ago

If you know what they mean then it's correct

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wrong.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I have never in my life heard it used how you're talking about. However, it's about the same as saying "that's was absolutely the most movie of 2018." It's a quirky way to give no information

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Technically yeah but also language is fluid. So 🤷‍♂️

by Anonymous 1 year ago

next you'll say mirin' isn't a word

by Anonymous 1 year ago

"I like the aesthetic" is a perfectly fine and acceptable use.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

op hasn't discovered slang yet, wait till they find out how most people use the word literally

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You can definitely use it as a standalone adjective; you just have to use it correctly. "aesthetic considerations are important," for example.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Oh, you are going to go insane when you hear some gremlin say "fuh real, fuh real" out loud.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Language evolves

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Um you're correct , as In factually, who tf talks like this?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

My teenagers who frequent TikTok talk like this

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Ah ok, thank you. I am an old.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It's just a TikTok thing, nothing worth concerning yourself about.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Oh, so dumb people stuff. Got it.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm going to have to agree with you in this one. Annoys the hell out of me. And makes me feel like a boomer. Which I am not lol

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Makes you feel like a boomer because being annoyed by slang and language evolving is peak boomer attitude.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I promise no one cares

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I care

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Like I said…no one cares

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Disagree. I can say anything I want to.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It's a neologism. With that logic, say goodby to "tweeting" and "Googling"

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Is this a thing? I've never heard it before. Personally I'd think the person had just misused the word. Rather stupidly to if you ask me.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Too*

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Oxford dictionary would beg to disagree
