+46 Wii NEEDS A COMEBACK (Basically a Wii 2) amirite?

by NoRelationship 5 months ago

they did. its called the WiiU, and was a financial failure.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

It failed due to marketing not the product. Obviously it would have never been as successful as the original Wii, rarely is a console successor.

by Primary_Village 5 months ago

Failed due to many factors, marketing was one of them.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

it looked like the Wii with a screen. What could you even market about it? it was terrible out of the gate. hence why i consider it a Proto-Switch

by Anonymous 5 months ago

You could market this product better, and it would have still been a failure.

by OddTruck6436 5 months ago

A failure compared to the Wii? Ofc, I addressed that. But a failure as a successor? Highly doubtful

by Primary_Village 5 months ago

It clearly did fail as a successor because we wouldn't be having this conversation now if it didn't fail.

by OddTruck6436 5 months ago

The response was under the premise that it would be marketed better? No?

by Primary_Village 5 months ago

Nah the product sucked too.

by Impossible-Unit-2211 5 months ago

In what aspect?

by Primary_Village 5 months ago

On a tech level, abysmally underpowered (especially the CPU). On launch day the thing took upwards of 45 seconds to boot to the menu. Performed worse in practice than the 360 and PS3, consoles already on their deathbed when the Wii U launched. Stylistically, it looked like a Fischer Price toy. Conceptually, nobody had any idea what to do with the things Nintendo themselves seemed to be basically totally out of ideas after Nintendo World (a launch title), unless you count Star Fox Zero which is hailed as the worst Star Fox game and a great example of why the Wii U concept didn't work (jerking your head up and down trying to pay attention to two screens at once). Marketing wise it wanted to appeal to people who played the Wii, and yet was too confusing to understand for those people. Try handing Grandma a Wii U tablet and seeing what she does. It also wanted to appeal to the more hardcore gamers who lost interest in Nintendo during the Wii era, but with an atrociously underpoweres box and third party support that dried up instantly, it couldn't appeal to them either. Instead, it appealed purely to the most hardcore Nintendo fans.

by Impossible-Unit-2211 5 months ago

It also had terrible specs, a gimmick controller, and not enough games at release.

by RateAutomatic3818 5 months ago

But Breath of the Wild was a huge game that redefined a beloved franchise and most people aren't even aware Super Mario Bros U exists. Hardly comparable.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

The controller didn't fail because of marketing. The controller failed because it sucked and wasn't worth using. The wii had alright specs for its time. The wii u released with poor specs, and competed against the Xbox 360, ps3, and ps4 in its lifetime. The day the wii u released it was already behind by years compared to the other consoles. It failed miserably in the catalog of games it had. Altogether, it was an unenticing gaming console even if it was marketed well.

by OddTruck6436 5 months ago

Just saying I've never heard anyone outside of this conversation mention how great the Wii U was and all of its beloved games. Most of the good games it had released for Switch as well and was received better than the Wii U.

by OddTruck6436 5 months ago

It failed due to Irrelevant. It failed.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

lol if you think marketing killed the wii u, you never played a wii u literally just a wii with a touch screen controller. performance was ass, with literally 800 less games

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I feel like if Nintendo did a better job at marketing the Wii U and gave the Wii U more time before giving up on it. I feel like it would've been a much bigger success. I had a Wii U, I've had fun with the few games it came with.

by Cruickshankmarl 5 months ago

I still have my Wii U plugged into my TV along with my other systems. I don't play it very often any more but it was used daily for a few years. I think I have around 50 games for it.

by zhermiston 5 months ago

Even if you believe "performance was ass," the Wii U was much better in terms of performance than the Wii. Wii runs in 480p and Wii U runs in 720p.

by Primary_Village 5 months ago

oh man 720p

by Anonymous 5 months ago

At the Wii U's release, all other consoles ran 720p, so I don't understand what you're getting at?

by Primary_Village 5 months ago

that doesnt make 720p impressive or anything

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Honestly the Wii U was more of a successor to the 3DS than the Wii. A world exists where the Wii U was financially successful JUST because they marketed it as an HD DS rather than a Wii 2.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I see it as a proto-Switch. Like world war 1 tanks, its a tank, but not quite there yet.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

No, the WiiU was not a successor tothe 3DS, the 3DS was barely a year old.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I'm speaking more spiritually/mechanically than literally, though perhaps "extension" would've been a better word than "successor". The Wii U was designed to emphasize dual-screen play, the exact thing Nintendo found a lot of critical, financial, and creative success in. And IMO it's not a coincidence the games that are most beloved on the Wii U (minus Mario Kart 8) are all earlier ones that are built around dual screen play. Heck people forget Splatoon 1 used the touch screen for viewing the map and in-game comms pretty effectively, and their attempts to do so on 2/3 on the Switch feel so clunky in comparison.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I still have, play, and love my WiiU.

by luluglover 5 months ago

I guess our reply to op is no, wii do not

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Now that would be an unpopular opinion!

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I think the way to get the fun that the Wii was is to make more games that use the joy cons like the Wii remote was used. Skyward Sword for the switch is a great example of this

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Isn't the switch one of the best selling game systems of all time next to the PS2? Anyway I have a switch and keep it in the dock 99% of the time so it's basically a console for me anyway. I do agree with you to some degree where the joycons do have motion they aren't at all like using the wii motes with the sensor bar.

by Illustrious_Lock 5 months ago

If I had a switch I'd keep it on the dock a lot too, thinking about it… the switch is really fun, always had a good time using a friends

by NoRelationship 5 months ago

Yeah, I even have a switch game that comes with a wheel…you attach the joy con to the wheel and one to your leg and you run in place and squeeze and stretch the ring to pick up and shoot objects. I forget what it's called, it's some fitness thing but it's kinda like you're just crash bandicoot lol and very Wii like

by Anonymous 5 months ago

The switch can literally do everything the wii can and more.

by CompetitionFun 5 months ago

I don't think it has anything to stand/balance on does it?

by Regular-Sundae 5 months ago

This is what the dictionary definition of Nostalgia Goggles

by Anonymous 5 months ago

by NoRelationship 5 months ago

They could release like an anniversary Wii with a few upgrades that can run the old games, and then sell digital versions of Wii games for those that don't have old discs or can't find them. Could be quite the profitable little gimmick

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Yeah but like how they released a compact SNES for people to buy they could do the same with the original Wii. From a company standpoint it seems like an easy way to milk nostalgia. I can't imagine producing a Wii is that expensive anymore

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Would love that, Just remaster some old games and have the Wii run at least 60fps if not 80-120fps

by NoRelationship 5 months ago

The Wii already could do 60fps, it just depends on the game.

by zhermiston 5 months ago

The Nintendo Switch literally remade wii sports as Nintendo switch sports, its practically the same game. Then every nintendo console has a mario kart, which according to metacritic, Wii has the worst rating and switch has one of the best ratings. The Switch has the same motion control nonsense in its controllers that the Wii did, games just don't utilize them as much because the gimmick is old and outdated, and created a lot of resentment for just how much it was forced down player's throats during the Wii era. You can blame the garbage economy and degrading society for families not being brought closer. I think you're thinking of better times in general, which the Wii happened to exist in.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

The Switch has the same motion control nonsense Kind of. The Wii primarily used IR pointer controls for the majority of games, with a little bit of 'wiggle the controller' here and there. The Wii MotionPlus controllers that came out later had more advanced gyro controls but they weren't used in that many games. The Switch only uses gyro controls, no IR pointer, but the gyro is much better in comparison as well. For FPS games gyro aiming is fantastic, it's similar to using a mouse on a PC.

by zhermiston 5 months ago

The Wii 2 movement

by Anonymous 5 months ago

They did. It was called the Wii U, and it was a huge failure. Then they took their lessons from those consoles and made the Switch, which incorporates many of the Wii's best elements while filling the role of the 3DS, their best-selling console of all time.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I had a Wii and I loved it. I didn't even have any games but the two games that came with it. The Wii sports and Wii Play games. They were so much fun

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Wii would like to remind you of the WiiU and tell you. Wii do not need it.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Lol... You mean the switch?

by ViewTurbulent 5 months ago

No, the switch absolutely is closer to the Wii than the DS. For one it lacks the most important feature of the DS that set it apart... two screens. It has motion controls that have much better tech, it has the same kinds of fun / family oriented sports games and it has similar market presence because of it's sales performance. The only thing it has in common with the DS is that it's portable... Hell the switch is practically an untethered Wii U.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

The switch has a dock so you can play it with motion controllers on a television. The switch is literally exactly what you're looking for. It does 100% of everything the Wii did.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I hated the motion controls so much

by Anonymous 5 months ago

The Wii was awful and a bunch of 80 year olds playing Wii bowling and nothing else doesn't make for a healthy console ecosystem.

by Jason62 5 months ago

Tbh I never liked the controller and thank God for that classic controller option. It's always the first question I'm wondering when they come out with a console. Did they get weird with the controller again? Nintendo has a long history of trying to be kinky with controllers which is too important imo to be risky with. There was a power glove on the n64, the n64 controller itself wasn't all that normal, I don't even remember what the virtual boy had other than red. I much prefer Sony to go we've added a headphone plug to it or whatever else. Though that big touch button in the middle of the ps4 was useless. At least they kept the basic form though and didn't make it gym exercise rowing machine pulleys which is something I'm sure Nintendo is playing with. I agree though it;s the software (games) that makes the hardware.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I just gave my Wii to Goodwill because I prefer my Switch and Xbox and haven't touched it in a few years now. The ONLY thing I used to play on Wii that I wish I had for my switch was guitar hero (specifically the drums - that was my favorite while my sister was on the guitar. Yes she was the older one.) But I have an actual keyboard piano if I want to make music.

by Donnellycamylle 5 months ago

Not a gamer, but I got Wii fit just before I had my middle child. He's 13 now and all three kids drag it out and hook it up occasionally. It's loads of fun and there's been nothing like it since.

by Regular-Sundae 5 months ago

Unironically the Wii U was the perfect successor to the Wii, but it was destroyed by terrible marketing.

by sipesantoinette 5 months ago

Switch shouldve been called the wii 3, its better than the wii in every way except how hard it is to hack it to play emulators. I dont know how a switch is anything like a DS when it only has a single screen. It would be pretty cool if they made a switch with 2 screens and called it a DS tho

by ImpossibleFishing487 5 months ago

I loved the Wii as much as the next person, but I do not want that level of motion controls lol part of the reason I have not replayed through games like Prime 3 and skyward sword is that it's just too annoying to play with that level of motion controls. I want to use a controller, and if I need to use a minor level of motion controls like with breath of the wild for example, that's fine. Or at least make it optional to where I can play with a normal remote. I'm glad SS was remade because imo it's one of the best Zelda games, but I'm wishfully waiting for a prime 3 remake with normal ass controls lols (prime 2 remastered would also be sick considering it's my favorite game of all time but playing it on the GameCube is just as fine).

by Trantowlavinia 5 months ago

YES!!! YES, and a thousand times more YES!! The Wii was my childhood. Fortunately I got a used console from my aunt and I bought games, controllers, motion plus attachments, now my much younger siblings can experience the same fun I had, except it's even better for them, because playing the Wii for me was pretty much limited to going over to friends' houses to play.

by Morarcalista 5 months ago

No idea what you think this magical "interactional" console would look like or do. Sounds like you're blindly just looking to recapture your youth.

by Impossible-Unit-2211 5 months ago

Name one feature that the Wii had that the Switch doesn't do better. Do that and I'll agree with you.

by Natural-Bicycle 5 months ago

Nobody would buy it. It was a fun gimmick for it's time though

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Motion controls just arent that fun, cool to try out a few times like vr but that's it imo. When it first came out it was pretty much the first of it's kind, nobody would be excited to buy one anymore.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Motion controls like gyro aiming for FPS games is fantastic, but what isn't that fun is pointer games.

by zhermiston 5 months ago

We already had a "Wii 2," it was called the Wii U. It was a massive flop for Nintendo. Also, handhelds are not a waste of money. You're missing the reason as to why people buy a handheld, and that's to play games on the go. The series S may have a broader library, but it's also a lot more difficult to play one of them on the go.

by Cruickshankmarl 5 months ago

bashing the switch(and handhelds) I play my Switch docked like 99% of the time. I appreciate that it can be played handheld and I sometimes use it like that, but that's not what I got it for.

by zhermiston 5 months ago
