+71 The NFL should force Tua Tagovailoa to retire, amirite?

by Unaruecker 4 months ago

It's at least his 5th not 3rd. He was concussed so badly in college on the same play he broke his hip that he doesn't remember the incident. Then he had two for sure ones two seasons ago and is believed to certainly have had a 3rd that was missed. Who knows how many others were missed.

If not the NFL, his family. At some point you have to put your passion down in order to be able to live a long, healthy, quality life. He's going to risk getting another and then by 45 not be able to do any daily task on his own because of severe brain damage. It's easy to say oh he's fine now but it all adds up and comes out the older you get

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I agree. He is only 26 years old. He has his whole life ahead of him.

by Unaruecker 4 months ago

He's a father. He has a debt to his kids to be around at least 25 years. As a functional person.

"Dolphins fan here" Felipe is that you?

Not unpopular

by Anonymous 4 months ago

It's not?? I think the popular opinion would be, "Tua should retire of his own free will." What happens to his contract if he's forced out? That could cost him well over $100m. I know money isn't everything, but who are you (or the league) to decide what he thinks his health and family's future is worth?

by Brianne76 4 months ago

The way they wrote it he's basically getting everything if he's medically not cleared to play, Which is what it means if the NFL forced him to retire. If he retires on his own he's not getting the rest of the contract. Same as any player who retires under contract. He's very lucky/smart he was able to get a contact extension this off-season.

If he's not medically cleared and is forced to retire, he's entitled to the remaining $124m of guaranteed money in his contract. If he is medically cleared but decides to retire, he'll forfeit that money. Being forced out is the best case scenario for Tua.

Yea, I actually don't disagree. He's gonna get himself severely injured or killed.

by No_River627 4 months ago

Athletes are glorified for playing with injury. You'll never get them to step away voluntarily

by Elbertmurphy 4 months ago

Not as much about that than it is money. Kind of hard to give up 52 million a year. That's generational, family money.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Which tbh is kinda silly. He's already made enough that at least a couple generations shouldn't need to work a day in their lives I'd they don't want to. His kids and even grand kids shouldn't really be lacking anything if he retired today. A family can live pretty comfortably on the interest alone

by Easy_Crow_4249 4 months ago

as long as they're paid insanely silly amounts of money.... yeah.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

He will retire on his 4th concussion

by Anonymous 4 months ago

NFL will never force a player to retire. They may force him to wear a guardian cap. If Tua is smart he'll retire.

by OkZookeepergame6296 4 months ago

Different sport but my team has a player who has collapsed on the field and got diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and then collapsed a second time due to cardiac arrest. He's had almost a year off but he's been training and plans on returning to the sport. Not downplaying the incidents with Tua just highlighting how even under near death circumstances, these athletes aren't just going to walk away from what they love

by Anonymous 4 months ago

And the UFC should admit that it's a bad idea to bash one another's heads in

by Curious_Bake_5843 4 months ago

Right? Just cancel the whole thing. These athletes can decide what they want to. Even if it's not in their own best interest

by Brianne76 4 months ago

I don't know if this is unpopular… I really don't want to watch somebody die on the field… Hamlin was an eye opener and who knows what the next big one would do to Tua

by Tricky_Driver 4 months ago

Yet it's still his and only his decision.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I think this is only unpopular with NFL execs

by Anonymous 4 months ago

A doctor needs to so he can collect on injury guarantees

by HoneyBitter2834 4 months ago

Agreed. Relatedly, what happened to the Dolphins? They were like a video game for weeks last year and now they're a shadow of their selves, even before the injury. How?

Early season vs bogeyman teams

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Tua is a grown ass man who can make his own decisions The league wants to downplay/deny any links between it and CTE It won't happen and shouldn't happen. But, I think Tua should retire of his own free will, too

by Brianne76 4 months ago

Tua is a grown ass man who can make his own decisions i'm not sure this is true for people literally suffering brain damage...

by Anonymous 4 months ago

So people should take all of his executive decision making away?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Hope you never get a concussion, or age.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You're pretty thick.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

yeah, my wife loves it in bed. how'd you know?

you got me

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Are you his doctor? He seems to have his wits about him. He talks normal, acts normal, does interviews, etc.. It will absolutely catch up with him. But, he seems fine now. He hasn't gone off the deep end like AB yet. In fact where was all this energy when Mr. Big Chest was having his issues??

by Brianne76 4 months ago

Steelers fan here. There was a remarkably short amount of time between AB being a run of the mill diva WR and seeming as though he literally had brain damage. And he was out of the league shortly after that. He was pretty well behaved for his tenure with the Steelers.

by No-Fee 4 months ago

But he didn't have a very public history of multiple concussions before and after the Burfict hit. He was having issues, but they were pretty typical for a douchebag WR at that point. It wasn't until he left the Steelers that he really went off the rails. And once that started, he was out of the league quickly.

by No-Fee 4 months ago

Sorry The only one who should be able to make that decision is Tua and his medical team. Everyone else needs to simply shut up.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Don't be so soft

by Large_Meringue 4 months ago

How many concussions have you had, for the curious?

by Warm_Examination3819 4 months ago

Agree, Watson as well
