-35 Soy sauce does not belong on steamed white rice. amirite?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I like soy sauce on my white rice. If you don't like it, don't use it.

by Wide-Cold 4 months ago

Yes it does.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Unless that is all you are eating then no it doesn't. It is like spoiling a high end ribeye with A1 sauce.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Yes it does

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You as well.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Whats wrong with a1?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

An animal died to give you that steak. If you enjoy it best with A1, then you do you. It would be a shame to enjoy something less just because it will make someone else feel better about how they would enjoy it. I think the same way when people get offended about well done steaks and burgers.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

pretentious steak purists are offended if you mask the flavor of a fine steak. Like if you have fancy steak, you must enjoy the steak for what it is on its own. They would argue that A1 is just to make low quality steak more palatable

by Anonymous 4 months ago

The great part about being a layman and not understanding the intricacies of somethin, is that normal stuff is just as good as the expensive stuff. And if im going to put A1 on the normal stuff ima put it on the expensive stuff too

by Anonymous 4 months ago

The only reason I eat steak is so I can drown it in A1 sauce lololol

I somewhat agree. Soy sauce is nasty if you sprinkle it or, God forbid, make it rain on steamed rice, no matter the side dishes. You add it when you're cooking the dishes. Sweet soy sauce, on the other hand, hits differently. A great sunny side up egg with crispy edges, served with steamed rice and sweet soy sauce, is THE sauce! It's a classic comfort food for most Southeast Asians.

by Just_Battle 4 months ago

That sounds delicious, gonna give it a go. Is sweet soy sauce the same as dark soy sauce or something different?

by Monahanaiden 4 months ago

It's got a unique taste. Indonesian sweet soy sauce is sweet and complex, while dark soy sauce has a more pronounced salty and umami flavor. ABC and Bango are the go-to brands for sweet soy sauce here and are often used in stir-fried dishes. You can find them depending on where you are. We don't use dark soy sauce much, but it's worth a try!

by Just_Battle 4 months ago

I agree. It should never be added without the raw egg as well. It would be too plain otherwise.

by Civil_Upstairs_6693 4 months ago

I see it as one of those "steak shouldn't be well done things". If you like it that way, then do it. If you don't, don't do it. It doesn't matter what society, traditional culture, or anything else has to say. Your food, your body.

dark soya sauce and butter on white rice is chef's kiss

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I can't imagine caring what other people eat

by Jedediah01 4 months ago

I can't stand soy sauce and even I disagree with you.

by Total-Skirt-3107 4 months ago

OP cannot be Asian lmao

by Emotional_Car788 4 months ago

Yeah. I was going to something more specific but I didn't wanna come off as racist.

by Friesencory 4 months ago

Oooooooooooor we could just not care how other people enjoy food?

The primary purpose of rice has nothing to do with balance my guy

by Anonymous 4 months ago

It has everything to do with it my guy. It is not just a carb filler.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

No the primary function of rice is being a food source. 1000 years ago 99% of people were not thinking about balancing a mael because of a salty other food.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Yes it is

by qrau 4 months ago

this is not an unpopular opinion, op is just trying to tell people his personal preference is the "right" one.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

So why when I eat out do 95% of customers pour it over their white rice ?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

95% of the world is wrong. Got it.

by isabel88 4 months ago

Seasoning including soya sauce should go in the dish and during cooking. If the dish is too bland when you eat it then add soya sauce to the dish. Of course anyone can add whatever they like to anything.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Yes it does. I love it on white rice.

by Stock_Routine 4 months ago

Some of us aren't crazy people and like to enjoy our foods. One of my go to breakfast meals is scrambled eggs, rice, and lite soy sauce

by ClassroomVast 4 months ago

That's like having spaghetti with no tomato sauce

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Ok Mr bland

by Anonymous 4 months ago

If Soy sauce is the poison, rice vinegar is the elixir.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Think of steamed white rice as the foundation of a dish. Adding soy sauce is like painting over a masterpiece with a broad brush.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Is that the primary purpose of white rice? Or just the purpose you came up with. Also, if the dish itself isn't salty then adding the soy sauce isn't clashing or compounding with the dish itself. I was under the impression that the purpose of white rice was to be a major source of carbohydrates in your diet and something to bulk out your meal or to be a "vehicle" for whatever else you're having (including soy sauce).

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Not all dishes are salty though. The beauty of steamed white rice is that it is an open canvas for different kinds of condiments and seasonings.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Steamed rice is perfect on its own, like a classic album. Soy sauce is more like a remix that might not always fit.

by lianawilliamson 4 months ago

Unseasoned chicken eater here

by Jackmacejkovic 4 months ago

One of the primary purposes of steamed white rice is to balance out the saltiness of a dish. Or maybe it's simply that plain rice is bland so you need to make the dish more salty than if you were to eat the dish on its own.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I eat white rice by itself with soy sauce at least once a week

by litteldariana 4 months ago

It's like putting ketchup on a gourmet burger—sometimes simplicity is the key.

by Irma07 4 months ago

Maybe I just like the taste of soy sauce? If that's is the case, then using the rice to balance the saltiness of the soy sauce is just using the rice as intended, per your rules. You'd hate the fact that I've been known to put butter AND soy sauce on my rice. Yummmmm

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I am with you, OP. And if I may add, I also think soya sauce is more of a cooking ingredient than a condiment, but that's just me.

by PlentyTap 4 months ago

Man none of y'all sayin this are Asian and it's showing 😭 Soy sauce is a condiment. If you don't like it alone, that's fine. But it's mostly used as a condiment lmao.

by Emotional_Car788 4 months ago

soy sauce is for fried rice keep regular boiled rice plain white

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Exactly.
