+41 It's ok to euthanise healthy pets. amirite?

by Majestic_Title_6014 3 months ago

Or, criminalise breeding until all those healthy animals in shelters have homes. You don't need a £1000 inbred puppy when there are animals in need

Ugh

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah no

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Great idea! Now we should apply that to overpopulation as well!

by Outrageous-Pea6615 3 months ago

OP is pet Thanos.

by Ambitious_Field 3 months ago

I wonder OP's solution to human overpopulation would be? I'd bet you money it involves some sort of genocide.

by Ambitious_Field 3 months ago

According to your logic we don't have to deal with root causes of human-related problems like homelessness either, and we can just euthanize them as well.

by Huge-Fly 3 months ago

Note the "healthy" in the title? OP is saying you should be able to kill pets for any reason, including if they're just in the way.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I saw it... just telling you that even sick is no longer enough for vets.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Having worked for veterinarians, I feel like the opposite is usually true. Usually people don't wanna put their animal down, and the vet is encouraging them that it is the right time. Honestly, I would just go to a different vet.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Thanos approves of this

by LivingSuch8836 3 months ago

There's nothing wrong with putting a dog down under the right circumstances, like if it's slowly dying anyway and suffering so you put it out of its misery. I had to make that decision before and it's an incredibly difficult decision to make but it is the right one. I don't think anyone is saying dogs shouldn't ever be put down. In a way we are kinder to dogs than we are ourselves, in most places in the world voluntary euthanasia for terminally ill people is illegal yet it isn't for dogs. If anything it should be legal for humans too.

by Ambitious_Field 3 months ago

True, finally someone said it.

by FollowingSpare9870 3 months ago

Or, I don't know. Set up a preserve where they can just live their lives... I don't understand why we have this notion that dogs and cats shouldn't be allowed to live their lives like squirrels and deer.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

cos they will destroy the local wildlife? How much acreage of wilderness does it take to sustain a dog anyway? The unwanted dogs and cats would kill off every wild animal in this 'reservation' and would then starve to death.

by loyce37 3 months ago

They would still destroy less than humans so give them their space I say,

by gust28 3 months ago

they only exist in the first place because of humans. A former pet destroying an ecosystem is just a human destroying the ecosystem, with extra steps.

by loyce37 3 months ago

So, are you going to start running around pulling all apex predators out of their habitats?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

No, but I'm also not going to breed a bunch of crocodiles and release them in the Galapagos either. A natural population of apex predators in an ecosystem is just so obviously different to artificially introducing a bunch of apex predators to an ecosystem. Do you really need this pointing out?

by loyce37 3 months ago

Then your point is useless. I didn't breed a bunch of cats; that doesn't change the fact that there's a colony of strays reproducing down the road. TNR is the only way forward unless you're advocating the removal of all small felines and canines from our continent.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Humans bred cats… their point makes perfect sense lol. You don't have to directly and solely be responsible for it to be a problem..

by Anonymous 3 months ago

The more I think about this, the more I realize that respecting the sanctity of life as a species that causes death to stay alive is an utter moral absurdity. But since I don't want to be cannibal food, I'll say that it's good to not kill if you don't have to.

by Norbertorau 3 months ago

I'm tired of so called animal lovers obsessing over keeping animals alive with complete disregard for the animal's quality of life It's definitely worse to think of yourself as the judge, jury, and executioner of an animal that can't tell you whether or not it wants to live. I don't even think it's okay to euthanize unhealthy pets. Euthanization being a moral decision is based on the fact that we think we know best. It's just human narcissism

by Professional_Foot 3 months ago

I agree. If you care about animal welfare, then why would you raise and kill a bunch of chickens just to feed them to a cat nobody wants? Kill the cat, and then you don't have to kill as many chickens. People merely cannot conceive that the dead animals that come in packaging are just as much of an animal as the live ones they think are cute and fluffy. The idea that keeping this unwanted dog alive for another month involves killing a bunch of animals is completely over their head. In fact they resolutely refuse to understand this point.

by loyce37 3 months ago

I'll go even more unpopular and say that a lot of private no-kill "shelters" are run by animal hoarders who have just figured out a socially-acceptable way to hoard animals.

by FortunePrestigious52 3 months ago

As long as they actually provide those animals with a safe clean environment and love, why is that wrong? Geez people should learn to live and let live

by Rogersrath 3 months ago

Right? What an interesting opinion: "We shouldn't let people hoard and care for animals. They should be killed instead!"

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Some people just can't comprehend having enough love in your heart to care for unwanted animals. I bet he has wild opinions on orphanages🤣
