Pointing out the bad isn't "being negative" - It's instead "acknowledging reality", amirite?
by Anonymous3 months ago
but being negative can also be avoiding reality. i.e. people being anxious and overthink

Very true point!

If you can control it, it's not overthinking. If you can't control it, it's overthinking. So the real goal should be identifying what you can control, not whether or not it's "okay" to "be negative."

It's being negative if you're just pointing out the bad without any sort of solution, or ignoring any of the good, or just in general bitching about things outside of your control or things that make you an insufferable human being like "whoa is me my tiktok political opinions aren't globally enforced across the world how ever will I continue on?" It's acknowledging reality if you recognize the situations for what they are, the good and the bad, and your words/actions reflect that you someone capable of ultimately bringing positive things to yourself and the world. The world doesn't need any more complainers than we already have

It's being negative if you're just pointing out the bad without any sort of solution True, but how many issues do you find an immediate answer to? Think about it in terms of a math problem. You have to think about it right? Once you think about it, THEN you're able to understand it, and solve it. Same with life!

It's important to be able to admit unpleasant things. Something that's all but forgotten in today's society - an excellent unpopular opinion. Once the negative has been acknowledged, it can be much easier to go back to appreciating the positive, at least for me.

Exactly! you don't EVER solve problems by ignoring them, but rather addressing them, acknowledging them, and then facing them, or learning how to accept em!

Some people just like looking into gutters no matter how nice the street they are walking on
by Anonymous3 months ago
They don't like it, they're wired that way.
by Anonymous3 months ago
True, but you can't truly appreciate how nice the street is until you can at least acknowledge that the gutters exist!

How dare you not gaslight yourself that everything is fine and will be fine and no don't worry about any problem in your life at all, that's being so negative and you're not enjoying life, it could be so much worse but you're in a good spot! Lest you develop... The mental illness. (actual things I've been told anytime I express any worry)

LOL Well you're in the right place because those people are delusional!

If you only point out the bad then you are being negative. Reality is nuanced, it's good and bad, if you are only focusing on the negative, then you are being negative. You don't have to be delusional about stuff, but things can be good and that's reality too. Don't just focus on what's wrong with something

Negativity is equated with realism. In reality, far fewer bad things happen than good/neutral things. Negativity bias makes you notice the bad things more. Most "realists" actually live in a fantasy world where everything is terrible (or will be eventually).

Negative feedback corrects and improves. Positive feedback causes a system to go into undamped oscillations.

Exactly. It's like vegetables, but for your ability to solve problems. Sure it's unpleasant, HOWEVER, the end result is a more mature resilient being!

A few things. First off, if someone is "always being negative" like from your example, than they are most likely just complaining. From my experience, life has ups and down, but it's not always down. So always being negative is a big issue. If life is always negative for that person, they probably need some help in one way or another because it's not suppose to be that way. Well gaslighting may occur in some cases, pointing out the glass half full side vs the glass half empty alone is not gaslighting. It's an encouraging thing to see the positive side. Yes, you can benefit from examining the negative parts to be able to determine what is going on and learn, and it is a great thing when we can learn how to fix our issues. "Wisdom is sorrow" after all for a reason. However, the mental health benefits of viewing from the glass half full viewpoint are much better for the individual than always viewing from the negative, glass half empty side

It can be either. The overall reality of going to something fun is good. If you spend the entire time up to and during a fun event pointing out the negative. That's not acknowledging reality, that's being negative.

Fair, there's a time and place, but my point still stands that to solve a problem, you must understand it.
