+53 "Open concept" houses where there's no separation between the kitchen and social spaces are inferior. amirite?

by AdditionalOffice6767 2 months ago

it's for parents who are cooking to also be able to keep an eye on their little kids in the living room. That's who is buying those houses.

by UseNo8749 2 months ago

That's a benefit for parents, but the cost is absolutely no privacy

by sammyhaley 2 months ago

Also a bunch of spaces to not use. I'm not hosting lavish dinner parties so why would I need a separate dining room that would never be used? And don't get me started on sitting rooms… I like using things I pay for.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

Thats why I use my dining room as a music room reading nook

Every party we've had since university has ended upw ith a huge group chilling in the kitchen open or closed concept

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I hate open concept. Any mess in the kitchen can be seen from the living space, kitchen smells aren't contained, and there aren't enough walls for furniture and artwork. I love separate spaces for different uses.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I'm convinced the home decor shows promote "open concept" because it's easier to showcase the final overall look. It's a made-for-TV design conspiracy!

by Anonymous 2 months ago

Also, it's just flat out cheaper for the builders as they don't have to spend the time and money constructing extra walls. I HATE it.

by larsonreagan 2 months ago

Agree, don't care for open space concepts.

WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE. I LOVE ROOMS. Multiple rooms not just one giant room like you live in a barn. Open concepts are the bane of my existence

by larsonreagan 2 months ago

I like the way it looks but I functionally prefer the seperate rooms in my house it seems bigger that way too

As a person who loves to host and cook, it's awesome to have an open concept space, because being in the kitchen is part of socializing. It sucks to do all the work and be cordoned off from your guests as though you are working for them. The closed off version is great if you're rich enough to have household help and don't actually do much cooking or hosting duties yourself. Otherwise, this closed concept style seems more suited to the 1950s, where the woman's place was in the kitchen, and the men stayed in the living room with their cocktails. I've seen quite a few old sitcom episodes about how women hated this even back then.

i love my open plan apartment! we host a lot and my boyfriend loves to cook, so it's nice to be able to hang and be comfy while he's not alone in a room slaving away. I'd be open to a seperate living space if the kitchen was big enough for a nice seating area and not just a dining table though.

Ah yes man can go back to its normal state of sleeping in a recording studio.

This got me 😂

I agree. I bought an open concept place and regret it. When people come over they're all in the same space whereas at my in laws some people can congregate in the kitchen, others in the living room etc.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

If you take the typical open concept home and put a room between the kitchen and where ever, youll realize how small these spaces are. The open concept is popular because it makes two small spaces one large space.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

It sucks. I ended up building a basement theater so I don't have to hear clanking in the kitchen thing my tv shows.

by Kristybauch 2 months ago

How dare the help make too much noise!

by Anonymous 2 months ago

Open concept in general just sucks. It's basically the "we have no idea how to decorate multiple spaces" of design. Individual rooms are so much more cozy. I don't want to live in an auditorium

Ok boomer, time for bed gramps 😂💀😂

by Ernest02 2 months ago

I came here to say okay Boomer but you beat me to it.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

Great minds think alike

by Ernest02 2 months ago

Somebody keeps letting all the grandpas out to run around and wreak havoc. Somebody needs to get fired from there keep grandpa in the pen job.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

On the flip side, if you have family over and you need to cook, it's easier to be part of the socializing without everyone having to crowd in the kitchen.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

Ya but when you want to be away from family members there is no escape unless you go outside🤣🤣

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I don't think it's unpopular, I think my preference for this layout is unpopular. I love open concepts!

If its a large house where the living space doesnt feel cramped, sure. If its a smaller house (2-3 bedroom) the open kitchen can add to a feeling of being in a larger more open space. Its a tool to be used when needed. Just because a hammer is bad at chopping down a tree doesnt make hammers useless.

Yeah having a bunch of dead space with a bunch of hallways is superior as fakkkkk. Open concept maximizes the living space it's objectively better in most places.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I love open concept and would have it if I could afford it. I don't often have guests, and I don't like a bunch of closed off separate rooms, nor do I need them. Open concept feels so much lighter in terms of airflow too. It also allows lots of natural light as long as there are enough windows.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

We have an open kitchen/ living room. I love it.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

So the person making all of those cooking noises don't want to be around the guests. Got it. Parents prepping meals for fam don't really want to keep an eye on their kids. People visiting love hanging in a galley kitchen while prep is being done all around them. Cook loves those people in their way the whole time loitering.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I love our open space — easy for friends to hang out, taste the food we're cooking, and sip wine while joking around and making sides.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I like seeing my kids when I'm cooking. And they like being in the same space. Much more common scenario than cooking while guests are in another room. They often either help, or arrive when most of the food prep is done.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

Right. Crank up the TV for a movie because the kitchen is loud. The kitchen quiets and you need to lower the movie volume Put a screen on the front and a camera on the back of the wall you want to "just blow out" so you can see through it -- without effing up the house

by Anonymous 2 months ago

THANK YOU. Let every room just have a function without a teenage kid feeling like he has to hold himself up in the bedroom just to get a moment's Peace. Absolutely hated growing up in one of those places, and lost respect for my parents for thinking that it was soooo chic.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I love them. I cook a lot, and spending all day in a kitchen separated from my partner would be really depressing. I like that I can be cooking and still able to socialize.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

What if the kitchen IS a social space for some people?

by schuylerstolten 2 months ago

Then socialize in the kitchen.

by AdditionalOffice6767 2 months ago

Nah open plan all the way. Chuck the guests in the theatre room if you think you are going to be noisy

by Anonymous 2 months ago

Yeah if your house is big enough to have a theatre room maybe open concept makes more sense 🙄

by larsonreagan 2 months ago

The only advantage I like is being able to watch your kids in the play pen or something while you cook.

by Anonymous 2 months ago

I mean, I have a special room in the house where I host guests. They do not go into my private spaces. Also we do not go there unless we have guests over.
