+46 Thinking that the world or society will end in their lifetime is delusional. amirite?

by Samaracormier 8 months ago

Idk I can see that happening with nukes or stuff like that

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Nuclear weapons and making more nukes actually deters the use of nukes.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Especially given the rise of authoritarianism and xenophobia in those nations that have nuclear weapons. That's not a good combination.

by Maggioadeline 8 months ago

You are correct. People have been saying the world is going to end for the past 200 years. It's getting old.

by These_Option 8 months ago

High tensions, nukes, killing the oceans, etc. etc. There are plenty of reasons it could happen within our lifetime. Things that are currently happening and aren't delusional at all. I would say it probably isn't, but it is most definitely not delusional to look at certain massive problems we're facing and be concerned. We literally have environmental scientists who have been warning us for decades. Completely ignoring all of this would be the delusional thing to do, imo.

A lot of governments have fallen over the years without "the end times" arriving. Something like widespread climate change or nuclear winter might be something else though. That said, if you don't have specifics, you're just like a crazy guy with a "The end is nigh" sign.

by Nice_Signal5917 8 months ago

The end is nigh If you've played mass effect, you heard this in your brain.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I don't know if we're in the "end times" per se, but we do seem to be on track for a "bumpy road ahead." Especially Geopolitically. Domestic Politics (in the U.S. anyway) are particularly tense given the dimension around Trump as well

by grantkoelpin 8 months ago

We're definitely heading in that direction though - anthropogenically.

Unless you look at facts, like crime at a 50 year low, medicine is better than any other time in history, and people live longer. But yeah, I guess it doesn't feel like it to you.

Many ppl plan for the worst case scenario so when anything happens (Hurricane Helene) they are better off and can help others immediately So get some stockpiles basic tools and be more useful person

by Anonymous 8 months ago

That's not the same thing as what OP is describing. Steve with a good head on his shoulders and has a reasonable desire to plan for the future stocking up on dehydrated meals and survival tools is not the same as Randall who has hoarded an arsenal into his house, and constantly yells and raves to his family and to people on the internet about how they must be prepared for when Jesus comes back to start the rapture

Rome had a lot of very ugly times and good times before it actually felt. It may sound disappointing for apocalyptic people, but their entire reality will likely just be seen as a bump in recorded history, or maybe not. There are always rumors of the end of time at any given time, so eventually, someone is going to get it right.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I think any sort of singular cataclysmic event that ends all life on Earth is wildly unlikely. IMO the "world will end" over a long period of time inhabited by people who do not realize they are living through what future historians will call a sort of apocalyptic era of human history where civilization breaks down and societal progress is reset

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Well, eventually someone will be right.

With how polarized society seems to have become, I have a bit more cause for concern about a societal collapse or civil war. I certainly hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime, but I won't be surprised if it did.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I'm with you on this most like not in our lifetimes. But at the same time a sudden event can literally happen at any random moment

by Dull-Bullfrog-253 8 months ago

I would go as far as saying it's narcissistic. we are insignificant. we are not more special or unique then those who came before us.

Reality likes to spite people who think they know truth.

It's delusional to think that major catastrophes don't happen all the time in history, logically they will happen again. It's delusional to not take into account the phenomenal advances in technology that have been made in the past 100 years. There's nothing delusional about worrying about increasing political and economic instability around the world when 9 countries possess nuclear weapons. A quick google search says that the global stockpile of nuclear weapons is 13,000. People used to be happy to just let the government handle it, but those days are changing fast. We have a lot to fear in our future. You're an idiot. Not to mention the unprecedented damage we have done to the environment. Sure, armaggeodon, probably not. But we don't need armageddon to be concerned about the future, we just a need war. It's all fine and dandy when you live in a huge country and can just move inland, have you seen the population of Indonesia? Where they are going to move when the waters rise? Armageddon probably not, but fascist America is definitely in the cards. I'd say it's even already here. This is the future we feared.

by Impressive-Emu-6939 8 months ago

People have been saying we're in the end times to a certain degree forever. The collective memory doesn't take into account how bad things have been and how much we have bounced back from.

by NewtNeither1976 8 months ago

It all ends when you die anyways.
