That's pretty gross to generalize such a large group of people like this

Sokka-Haiku by ExtendedMacaroni: That's pretty gross to Generalize such a large Group of people like this Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Avoiding challenges? I can guarantee I'd have far fewer challenges working some white collar desk job, even on the most uneventful day in the Army.

they opt for a path where decisions are made for them. Except by joining they are literally by definition making the decision to earn a living while also obtaining various training on a LARGE number of skills. The army for most is avoiding the challenges in life You have no idea what you're talking about.

Wow. I bet you have never served in the military a single day in your entire life. The reasons people join the military are as varied as the Soldiers in it themselves. You will meet people from all walks of life in the military, Some join it just to do their time and get the GI bill and their college paid for. More power to them. Much better than taking out student loan debts. Some join just because they have some dream of adventure. Some just join because of patriotism. A lot of people especially after 9/11 joined because they felt their country needed them. They answered the call. There is no one size fits all reason why people join the military.

The military was a great way to get your start in life not sure if that holds true any more but, if you go in at 18 you could be retired by 48. Plus you can get a degree paid for including free college courses while you are deployed. Free healthcare for you and your dependents while you serve and continuing care for the vet through the VA. Many jobs now have 6 digit sign on bonuses. VA home loans usually have a better rate and you can fund 100% with no down payment. You get physically fit You become disciplined in your day to day activities. You meet people who remain your friends decades after. You get to see the world. Your housing and food is paid for. Many employers value military experience above degreed applicants. My biggest regret in life is that I didn't stay in to retire.

You definitely run into some clowns, mainly its the 34-35 years old folks. Although most at that point do it cause "why not", most career options are not fruitful anymore without a garuantee of benefits... Again, why not. But like you say, I can attest to a few i met who like.... It was that or they would have been decomposing in a ditch, straight bafoons with no work ethic, no ability to conform to even the slightest degree (as much as it sucks theres still a bare minimum that displays decency and respect) Coming from someone who was actually there, yeah it can essentially be a welfare program, without true determinations placed on abilities, people just stay in, promote and become leaders. But anybody who is remotely competent or wants it to be a better organization is highly susceptible to say "this sucks" and just get out.

So how about people who work in the garbage industry, or video chat or sewer cleaning? Do you think they didn't lack direction or opportunities? Very few people in the world get to do their "dream job". Most people don't choose their path. You can still have personal growth in army, In fact it can make it easier to develop it, since army give you discipline, it eliminates distraction and it let you focus on yourself.

Shouldn't be an unpopular opinion, because it's a valid and true statement If you join the army because you're going nowhere and it helps direct you, that, in and of itself, is a good thing. I think it's nothing to be ashamed of. For every person that wastes their chance at ambition or whatever, there's another person who is "saved" by joining the structure and security

My friend joined just because. She is the younger sister of a famous celebrity.

I would just say uninformed

There are certainly some that join the army because they lack a sense of direction. But there's nothing wrong with giving it a go to see if that type of life suits you. But there are also plenty young kids who dream of becoming a soldier one day. That's their ambition. So I don't entirely agree.
