I get the feeling OP doesn't think respect is a two way street. Wild. Probably never worked customer service either

You might find that this opinion is unpopular because it makes no sense.

I still say thanks, it's not like it's going to hurt, and it just feels right to me, as they are serving me specify, I don't see it as a must, but I try to say it as why not? The worst case is they don't think much of it, and best they get a bit more happy, and it's easy to do and say.

You don't have to say thank you for every little thing. Like if your waiter refills your water or coffee 4 times and you only say thank you twice, no one is really tracking this.

If an item isn't on the shelf and you ask an employee if they could get it for you from the back, do you thank them when they return with it? Of course you do. It doesn't matter if it's part of their job or not. It's called being polite.

So when the person comes over and refills your cup saying "thanks" is too much for you?? You got beat up a lot in high school didn't you??

I'm guessing they didn't.

Tipping culture is a little wild these days, but saying thank you to someone that does something for you, if it's their job or not, is just being a nice person…

Yeah you're a piece of work. Super unpopular.

But being expected now to thank them for every little act they do is ridiculous. Really? Saying thank you is too much for you? I say thank you to anyone that does something for me regardless of who they are. My wife, my kids, my boss, the employees I supervise, servers at restaurants, the mechanic at the shop. Saying thank you is not hard and shows respect to others.

The difference is garbage men usually pick up the garbage early in the morning before most people are awake (at least in my area), so you're not gonna be around to thank them. Shelf stockers also do their jobs largely out of view of shoppers so there's no way to thank them while they're doing their job unless you shop during specific hours. A waiter does something specifically for you and you're there when it happens, so it's just basic politeness to say thanks. It'd be the same way if you did happen to see a garbage man taking your trash or someone putting something on the shelf that you wanted.

I just don't go out to eat when I'm in the states. It's not worth it. Living overseas for most of the past decade, going out to eat is soooooooo much better.
