+29 The haka is annoying, amirite?

by Opposite-Guard 1 week ago

There is an interesting dichotomy between on one side a group of Maori people doing the haka in the legislature to protest a bill that changes fundamental rights for their people... and on the other side a bunch of white dudes doing haka at an expensive wedding.

There's haka for different occasions. It's not just a 'war-dance'. I mean, if you don't like it then that's all good, but maybe you're not the main character in someone else's wedding video.

Just everything loud is annoying tbh

Not seen one person crying at you. Just you

I dunno, man. There's a difference between an unpopular opinion and borderline racism.

Parliament is for discussion

Be annoyed. They aren't doing it for you.

by Littelelmo 1 week ago

Seriously. Christ. People think the whole world revolves around them these days.

The haka isn't simply a war chant. It's used at welcomes and many other things. If you don't know what something is, don't criticise it.

by garrettpadberg 1 week ago

Finally someone said it. In the context of the congress video, it makes them look ridiculous

I get you. We have our own ethnic/cultural minority in Russia that gets randomly involved in loud public acts of performing their national dance, but at least they are just doing it for the love of dancing, for fun and feeling united. And it's still a bit annoying sometimes. But doing it as a statement in Parlament, shutting up your fellow congressmen... I can't even imagine. There are times and places for dancing and screaming, and then there are not.

You're loud and you're wrong

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You think they're doing it for you personally? It's not supposed to make you feel good.

by Dangerous_Rooster223 1 week ago

This is becoming a very popular opinion amongst conservatives so… no this not an unpopular opinion.

The maori people probably find our culture of killing and being arseholes annoying too, so get over it. Respect other people's cultures the same way you want to be respected

The maori people probably find our culture of killing and being arseholes annoying too, so get over it. Just ask the Moriori!

by Goodwinashlynn 1 week ago

"theres only one culture of killing and being assholes!!!!!!" Lmao

by Independent_Car1530 1 week ago

It's like that scene out of Indiana Jones when the guy with the sword carries on and he just shoots him. I feel the same way when I watch the haka 😂

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Are you okey?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

yeah I was mindful not to say anything too insensitive. I can appreciate how unique it is and what special place it holds in others' culture. I definitely think humanity would be less interesting as a whole without the haka.

by Opposite-Guard 1 week ago

Now THIS is a wild one

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sounds more like you have main character syndrome.

by Ritchiemarielle 1 week ago

Love how sensitive they get when it's criticised despite the fact the haka they frequently do before rugby games finishes with a throat slitting gesture. Charming and cultural!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Do the people who are doing the haka get sensitive or is like usual where a 3rd party gets sensitive on their behalf.

by GreenPuzzleheaded864 1 week ago

People like you are the reason the Haka needs to continue. Be annoyed all you want.

by haagabel 1 week ago

So... you're saying the point actually IS to annoy, or...?

by Historical-Double 1 week ago

Not to annoy but to antagonise The point is a war chant but transformed over the years to be a cultural celebration of Moari culture. People who call it annoying are being ignorant to it's significance to a vast group of people

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The exact opposite. The Haka exists to remind colonisers that the Maori people still exist as a people and as a culture. When privileged white douchebags call it "annoying", that's proof that it's still necessary. If it were up to OP they wouldn't do it any more and their culture would disappear.

Wrong country. Good work.

It's 3am, mistakes happen.

by One_Ambassador_2330 1 week ago

There is definitely a time and a place for it. Done well it's amazing but in a democratic debate or a wedding it's just trashy

by Appropriate_Top_6245 1 week ago

"Oh heavens! The poors are shouting and screaming again."

by Anonymous 1 week ago

"Dur, I don't like dem foreign folk doin foreign things, dur!!!"

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It is a tiny bit annoying. Why a war dance at a wedding? Do another dance they have plenty. A war dance at a graduation? I mean fine but you're trying to be special and it's like the aspie kid screaming and people just have to watch lol. Not saying it's not a cool thing but if you're always doing the battle cry at every occasion it kind of... you kind of look aspie

I do like it when rugby team from NZ does it, it makes sense. But that girl at the parliament made em cringe slightly. It did get her attention though so I gusss it worked
