+42 Thanksgiving is the BEST holiday hands down. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's often neglected because most of the world doesn't celebrate it. From what you're describing, it sounds like Christmas without presents, so I don't get why that's supposed to be better. I don't get getting into debt for presents either though.

TIL that the Philippines used to celebrate Thanksgiving the same date as the US. Then when people realized it was reinstated by Marcos, they abolished it. Minus one national holiday of food and gratefulness with the family... ah, well. Pride is better right?

Yea for some reason I don't think this question pertains to you. Depressing that you don't understand Christmas, it's mainly for parents and kids lol

I don't understand Christmas? What?

by Dharber 1 week ago

If you like all or most of your family this makes a lot of sense. However, for many people, the fact that the whole point is to gather with family, have a conversation, and spend time in each other's company and not much else is the entire reason they don't like Thanksgiving.

Easy solution: ignore family and gorge out on good food.

Groundhog's day is the most superior.

I'm neutral on it. My family has never done anything for it, so it was always just another October day to me. I do like the lack of pressure to do things though. I can't stand Christmas, and Hallowwen is starting to irritate me also.

Or maybe I'm in a country that celebrates Thanksgiving in October because not everywhere is the USA.

TIL that Thanksgiving was celebrated in other countries.

"Dear lord, we thank you for this beautiful land we stole and the millions of indigenous people we slaughtered to do it." Truly one of the holidays of all time.

It's the only four day weekend holiday for my company. We use it as a vacation and eat with the family on another weekend.

It would be, if we would do a "rebrand" of it to be focused on gratitude and got rid of the 'Christmas creep" in the retail world / media. I know it carries a lot of baggage, especially for aboriginal folks, and it largely ignored with "Christmas" starting the day after Halloween at most retailers.

I agree. It's not commercialized to the hilt as Christmas. And Halloween is just a promotion by the sugar industry.

Tell you me you aren't the cook without telling me. ;)

Weird way of saying Halloween

I hate football, and don't really like turkey. I bet you can guess how Thanksgiving ranks for me.

by wintheiseralvin 1 week ago

Low key ? I've never celebrated this holiday in my life and every year I hear about it through pop culture.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Don't forget the long 4 day weekend.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Also not as stressful as Christmas, very casual and it's usually nicer out.

My take: it's absolutely wasteful and quite possibly the most negatively American thing we can do. Eat in excess till we're gluttonously full and just toss the remaining that doesn't get taken home. You should also see what happens at a grocery store that evening before and day after, it's sickening.

by Viviannewhite 1 week ago

I'm not disagreeing that many are wasteful, but why do you toss the remaining? Mix it together in a pan with some butter the next days as thanksgiving hash lowkey I like that more than the dinner itself, but I do agree about stores the days before and after

by scummings 1 week ago

Right, when I did celebrate with family we ate turkey and leftovers until they were gone or went bad. Nothing ever went directly into the trash afterwards except for maybe stale rolls.

by Willmssamson 1 week ago

I'd argue thanksgiving leftover sandwiches are better than the meal itself. If people are throwing everything out after they're doing it wrong lol. What some stores do with food that doesn't get sold is unfortunate for sure though

I'm not from the US so I don't really get this niche American holiday but to me it just seems like just a normal day with a label slapped on it, sure it's related to pillaging and murdering thousands of natives but apart from that it's just eating a regular meal and talking.. like normal people and watching sports.. like a lot of people do every day
