+54 I think we should all speak one language, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Linguists have been pretty consistent in saying that this can't really happen because it would begin to diverge into different languages almost straight away. But it's not theoretically a bad idea, provided you don't mean that people only speak one language. Which is a terrible idea.

eh with the internet drift wouldn't be as strong as in years gone by, and the usa and britain have been separated for near 300 years and still basically speak the same language

That doesn't sound right. English is known in probably every country.

I kinda agree with you and I speak multiple languages. Even the fact that so many people speak English brings the world so much closer and I think that's amazing

There are many ideas and words that do not exist in certain languages. I get where you're coming from, but it would not be feasible to have a universal language without losing a lot of what languages have to offer. As a counterpoint to the idea itself, I think that language is one of the easiest gateways to curiosity about other cultures. Without language differences, people might become even more apathetic to exploring and understanding foreign cultures.

We should all speak in Wingdings or Webdings to be fair to everyone

by Front_Freedom_7812 1 week ago

In theory this would probably be a good idea but the language most people already speak is english and I think english is way too simple. I don't think everyone would be up to learning a language that's more difficult than the one they already know

No thanks. I love my native language. I get where you are coming from though but NO WAYS

Esperanto was already tried and failed. Need Plato's Republic scenario in order to establish something like that unfortunately.

"i'm not a fascist" "all languages except one need to disappear"

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I sort of agree with this, as language is one of the barriers to understanding people from other places. But given accents and dialects within a language can already be used by idiots to justify intolerance, then I'm not sure it would get us very far.

And obviously the answer is Navajo

Math. Numbers are the same in every language. (Like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, not one, two, three, four, five)
