Yes, it's dumb. Sure, cost (over time) may go down if you buy a better item, but if you don't have the money, it's useless advice. It's expensive to be poor.

OP is saying that most people can't afford to buy premium tires and shoes and mattresses, and all the people making the argument you're making are overly privileged without even realizing it.

Its tricky. When you do have the money to make a choice between a standard tire or a better one, then advice like this is usefull. But as the argument is made about a whole lot of different things as well, in my ears it just sounds like LPT: don't be poor.
