Sexual assault isnt a culture problem. ADHD and Autism isnt a culture problem. Death of a loved one isnt a culture problem. These are all psychological issues. How would an anthropologist help?

I would disagree on your first point. Sexual assault is definitely a cultural problem, in that our partriarchal culture tells us to look the other way when it happens.

Well the death of a loved one maybe could be just because culture used to help with that. Not my first choice obviously but it's at least possible

"Culture" helps with that, as in your culture probably has some kind of grieving process you learn about. An anthropologist isn't going to be any better at getting you through that than anyone else really. "Well the tribes of southern america used to..." Telling you about rituals people have isn't really a solve there.

Probably would've kms if not for therapy. I have a lot of problems stemming from trauma that has quite literally nothing to do with culture. Like Coming from someone studying history with a deep interest in anthropology, I cannot think of a single area of my mental health that would be bettered by seeing an anthropologist opposed to my therapist. Also you are aware psychology is also a scientific with a lot of scientific research and practices to back up its validity, correct? Also, once again, as someone getting my degree in history, there's a reason Freud's methods are used as inspiration, not actually practiced. Dude was high off his marbles. He got the ball rolling on the concept of talk therapy, but it's a practice that has developed over centuries and still is developing. Once again, I am very interested in anthropology and also believe people could benefit from learning about it, but I fail to see any connection between that and psychologists

This is like saying that medics and physicians convinced us that diseases exist, like... yeah? Because those actually exist and are seriously studied. Also, culture and some level of anthropology is taught in universities which offers Psychology as a career.

Tell me you don't know what you're talking about without telling me you don't know what you're talking about. The reason anthropologists don't pathologize is because that's not their job. They "enlighten" through empirical research. Their goal is to uncover how human society and culture works and develops. That is something different than individual psyche - which is the realm of psychology. And for what it's worth, there's a difference between clinical psychologists and research psychologists. Anthropologists don't have such a distinction because their field doesn't have questions or engagement with medical health - as does psychology. That said, plenty of psychologists have studied the work of anthropologists and there is A LOT of interdisciplinary research that clinicians study to become clinicians. So it's not like psychologists have no clue or understanding of the roles that social and cultural dynamics can play in clinical issues. But the DV they're dealing with are clinical.

I'd venture to say a trip to Anthropologie is typically more valuable than one to the psychologist.

I think I know what you are pointing to but unfortunately this wouldn't work. It would require a complete change in our culture to facilitate those states, and it's quite a task and challenge. Simple talking to people who know how older cultures 'worked' would be of little benefit. But I think where you're coming from and that's a spot on observation imho
