-38 Sushi is Japanese Burritos and I'm sick of pretending like they're not, amirite?

by dax58 5 days ago

Unless the Japanese start using flatbread instead of seaweed to wrap their rice, fish, etc, it's not even close to a burrito.

So what if you wrapped beef and beans in seaweed? Or raw fish and rice in a tortilla? These arguments are silly. Best to just call anything rolled a wrap and let god sort them out. :P

It doesn't have to be fish on rice. It can be egg, or beef, anything really.

You can argue maki is a kind of burrito but sushi is definitely not burritos

by Sea_Parsnip 5 days ago

Came here to add this. There are few, if any, rules for Maki rolls. But there are many rules for sushi/sashimi rolls.

Sushi is the rice.

Just like pasta is just noodle innit. Haha

There are a bunch of sushi's that aren't wrapped

Temaki may be closer to a burrito. And as someone else has said, sushi is the rice. In any case, I don't think we need to keep doing this. Cereal is not a soup, Pop Tarts are not ravioli, sushi is not a burrito.

Some opinions are unpopular because they're ill-informed

My guy what you're describing is a California roll. Real sushi is just fish sitting on rice.

Sounds like a burrito is maki sushi

Your not pretending bro

Maki are Japanese burritos

by Terrible-Ladder 5 days ago

Sushi is more than just the rolls, those are Maki. (futomaki, hosomaki and uramaki) Then there are nigiri, oshi, inari and chirashi, and more. Just because you roll something up doesnt make it a burrito.

And a cookie is just a pizza or is pizza a pie?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

??? That's like saying gyros and tacos are the same thing.

by Serious_Market_9326 5 days ago

The majority of sushi isn't in a roll like it is popularized. Most sushi is either on rice or just fish itself. The roll is just a way of doing it that is popularized in the west, not the entirety of the methods.

Sushi literally means soured (vinegared) rice. That's the only prerequisite to calling something "sushi." No wrapping required.
