I've heard that the idealized version of family life they show is a source of comfort for some people who had the opposite of ideal families and childhoods.

I mean, this is a highly popular opinion. Most people with more than two brain cells can see the unnecessary danger it places on the kids.

The truly scary part is that in most places it avoids all child labor laws. In LA if your kid gets put on a movie set they are still expected to do school work, they have mandatory breaks and restrictions on hours worked and money has to be put aside for the child so that the parents can't just take all of their earnings. (It's not a perfect system and kids definitely fall through the cracks but at least theres some regulation) When a mom or dad picks up a camera and starts filming their kids these restrictions don't exist. And there are already kids speaking out! Check out "The House of my Mother" by Shari Franke!

In recent years, I think California has tried to or is trying to implement more safeguards for kids who work in the family vlogging sphere.
