Adult romance novels look too much like YA novels, amirite?
by Spencercoralie9 hours ago
I don't mean to sound an alarmist pearl clutching nut But you sure did manage to

Ah, isn't that the beauty of the "no offense but" rule?
by Spencercoralie9 hours ago
99% of the time The statement that follows that is offensive

(That was the joke)

That's the joke!

What I feel is: YA has always had more in common with adult literature than with children's literature.

Do you have any examples? I admit I'm not terribly familiar with adult novels, but isn't the stereotypical cover art a guy in a pirate shirt with long hair and muscles?

The Ice Breaker series LOOK like they belong at a Scholastic Book Fair… they do not

I don't really read any YA anymore, truthfully. I was referring to the visuals/covers. Definitely should have made that more clear

The art style is cheap to create (fewer artist hours than the old style oil painting of Fabio covers) and inoffensive. It's not about luring YA readers or refusing to grow up. Publishers and authors self-publishing can pick the lowest bidder and have them make a cover their audience will tolerate.

You're absolutely allowed to hate it! Personally, I feel they all look too similar and often don't give any clues to what the book is actually about.

That's the other thing. They all look identical! I said earlier, they all look like screenshots from that mobile game Episodes
by Spencercoralie6 hours ago
Surely it's more of a case of YA books trying to look more "adult" because kids want to feel grown up.
by Anonymous6 hours ago
Can you clearly what you mean?
by Anonymous5 hours ago
Yeah, I realize I wasn't clear. Like another user said, there's one series that looks like it should be in a Scholastic book fair than an adult's bookshelf.
by Spencercoralie5 hours ago
Oh so you mean the cover art? Yeah I can see that being an issue.

It's literary equivalent of junk food which is totally fine for people to consume but I agree it makes up wayyyy to large a portion of the average readers diet and we could all benefit from eating more of our literary vegetables.

That's also true! Don't get me wrong, I love me a spicy romance here and there (I'm only human). But the bulk of my bookshelf is made up of a variety of different genres. I think my husband referred to it as cotton candy for the brain, which I fully agree with.
