It should not be acceptable to not know how to cook. amirite?

There's a difference between not knowing how to cook intuitively because that takes knowledge and practice, and not knowing how to follow a recipe. I say I "can't cook" because I lack institutional knowledge, knife skills, and confidence. I can follow a recipe if it's simple enough.

There are a scary amount of people who say they can't cook and mean they literally can't do more than use a microwave and occasionally throw something in the oven. I know one person who literally "can't boil water" and, the reality tbh, she means she refuses to learn to do anything more complicated than setting a timer. I wish I could say she's the only one I've met like that, but she's not.

See I can cook with a recipe as long as I follow it exactly and don't stray away at all in any way whatsoever. It just isn't something I enjoy doing especially if I'm making some from scratch.

That's just childhood lessons 🤣 My nephew tried to toast Pop Tarts in the toaster still in the shiny wrapper. It's a reasonable mistake when young.

Frankly more things in life should be written out as recipes and you just...follow the steps. 😂

I'm not even joking when I say that's why I love instruction manuals and code library documentation. In a tough adult world where no one tells you what you need to do to succeed, these documents do that.
