+46 Braking and performing evasive maneuvers to avoid squirrels on the road is stupid and dangerous, amirite?

by Terrible_Dance_1211 6 months ago

What are you doing that you've hit at least a dozen squirrels? In a decade of driving I haven't hit one

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Obviously not braking for them lmao

by Domingohayes 6 months ago

I've never had to slam on my brakes or swerve to avoid one. At most I might just slow down a little to give them time to get out of the way

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Well hopefully it stays that way. Sometimes wildlife just comes out of nowhere before you even have time to react. But the probability of that happening a dozen times is basically 0.

by Domingohayes 6 months ago

Yeah that's the thing, like I'm sure occasionally they might come out of nowhere but to hit over a dozen squirrels I feel like you'd either need to be intentionally doing it or driving way more than the average person

by Anonymous 6 months ago

I hit a squirrel for the first time yesterday and I feel so bad about it. I don't think there was anyway I could have avoided it without slamming on my breaks (someone was behind me) or swerving into the opposite direction lane. Even then, it jumped out at the absolute last second. I asked some family and friends and it didn't seem like a normal thing to happen. Which made me feel even worse and that I should have been able to avoid it.

It's OK every squirrel that is run over by a car gets a mansion made of acorns in squirrel heaven.

by Domingohayes 6 months ago

I've only ever ran over 1. You must seek them out or drive for a living

by Ancient-Mention 6 months ago

A dozen? That's not normal. I've been driving for 30 years and have never run over anything bigger than a frog.

by Mental_Car 6 months ago

I was taught that if it's small enough to hit, just hit it. People have rolled vehicles swerving for small animals.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

All y'all need to slow down and leave more space. Maybe it's not a squirrel, maybe one day it's a kid....

by Elegant-Cod 6 months ago

I'll sacrifice my car and my safety for a child, but not for a squirrel.

by Terrible_Dance_1211 6 months ago

You missed the entire point. You and everyone else needs to slow down and be more aware of your surroundings. You should be fully aware if there is another car close behind you, and they should be following at a safe enough distance to be able to react on a potentially dangerous situation. There are lots of potential dangers, not just squirrels. If you've ran over hat many in you're life, you're a bad driver.

by Elegant-Cod 6 months ago

What if the kid was a health insurance executive?

by Arvel30 6 months ago

If you've hit a dozen squirrels, you're trying to hit them, and I hope you wind up trapped upside down by the side of the road with frozen creek water filling your lungs.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Well if I do it won't be because I swerved to avoid a squirrel. Happy holidays, and I hope your have a wonderful life. One suggestion: get help.

by Terrible_Dance_1211 6 months ago

'Get help' says the squirrel reaper

by Mental_Car 6 months ago

If you've run over a dozen animals of any kind in 36 years of driving, you're driving too fast. It's only a matter of time before your reckless behavior hurts somebody. Will you aggressively rationalize that on the internet, too?

by Anonymous 6 months ago

No reason to sacrifice our cars or lives for you then

by Anonymous 6 months ago

i've avoided hitting anything and have swerved and all that since i was able to drive 30 years ago. i'd rather be a good driver who can avoid rodents while not rolling my car over

by Missouri94 6 months ago

I'm saying if you're okay with not slamming the brakes for a squirrel then don't to it for a human either, the outcome of your car will be the same, right? Just avoid it altogether

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Hitting another human is automatically a legal matter, inviting criminal or civil charges. The court system, the police and other people do not care if a rodent is run over.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

So what is it ok to try and avoid hitting? Rabbit? Cat? Dog? Deer? Why do squirrels not matter?

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Because animals exist purely to serve humans in the eyes of many, and are worthless if they can't provide anything. So why not run them over, their lives don't matter. Nature doesn't matter, it's just an inconvenience.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Sadly, I totally agree ☹️

by Anonymous 6 months ago

I always feel sad when I run a squirrel over. I try to avoid them, but not very hard. I've probably run over a dozen squirrels in total.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

but I'd rather be safe than kind. So does the squirrel.

by Free_Two 6 months ago

i've never killed a squirrel nor have gotten in a car accident. sounds like you didn't need to kill 12 of them

by Missouri94 6 months ago

I don't think it's excessive to run over that many squirrels. Where I live, squirrels are suicidal and try to cross exactly as a car comes.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

I actually hate you.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Yep. Back in April in Texas on the morning of the solar eclipse I was driving through hill country when a rabbit darted out in front of my car. I didn't swerve at all and obliterated it. I'm not risking my life and the lives of my passengers for a rabbit.

by adolphlesch 6 months ago

I'm plowing through anything smaller than a Labrador. I do however slam the breaks on for a line up of baby ducks or partridge.

by matteorowe 6 months ago

No.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Btw OP, a dozen is quite a lot, unless you are a delivery driver or something and literally spend almost all your time on the road. Do you live in a squirrel reserve? But seriously have you ever considered taking some Deep psychological tests, you may find the results very interesting.

People avoid squirrels??

by General-Result 6 months ago

My dad always told me not to swerve for anything but another person...
