There aren't recruiters for every job.

Every job, no, every field , yes. The point he is making is applying to jobs is just drops in a bucket, talking to recruiters makes you the bucket.

I'm not, but I understand why people don't trust recruiters and why they believe they are better off doing it on their own. Why waste my time talking to two dozen people trying to make a buck off my back when I can do it myself?

They just told you it was a waste of time.

You don't get to decide random strangers you don't know aren't efficiently looking for a job just because they aren't doing it the way you would do it.

No, no they aren't.

How is this bootlicking?

There's good and bad out there. If they think you're marketable they'll help you. Otherwise, you're on your own.

Absolutely and further, even if you are NOT looking for a job you should be in contact with an industry specific recruiter that knows what you make and what you WANT to do as a career trajectory. Recruiters get paid when you get placed and paid more the more you make. Once you leave your current role for a better role making more some one else at your company moves up or they hire. I get that some roles and industries get hounded CONSTANTLY by crappy recruiters or spray and pray marketing about jobs, but finding a good recruiter in your industry and giving them your info is an easy way to keep an ear to the ground for better opportunities that could change your life.
