Nailed it. People gravitate toward what feels rewarding right now. This is why I hope booktok becomes more popular so more people would dive into reading again.

Booktok on TikTok is mainly some women just reading Colleen Hoover novels, wattpad fanfics and some other smut, which aren't challenging in any way. It's still better than nothing, I guess

You mistake the sentiment. It is not can't. It is don't.

The brain will resist when getting into reading as most with smart phones have fried dopamine receptors. But after a while it becomes amazing. I go through phases where I read for a few months and then turn it off.

You don't need to read the fiction books with their fiction stories if you have the access to the social networks with their endless mix of fiction and real life stories.

People blame schools refusing to teach phonics, but I remember that my school taught phonics and did a LOT of various things to improve reading levels. Guess what? Even in middle school most of my classmates could barely read. I really don't know what elsey schools could have done.

The issue isn't literal illiteracy. Actually, being able to decipher the words is only one part of "being able to read". The problem is that people aren't interrogating what they read. They don't understand anything at more than a surface level. They are unwilling to look into anything or do any supplementary reading about anything. Lack of media literacy is the issue.
