+48 A lot of people make enough money, but they are too stupid to live within their means. amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Cutting back on spending and avoiding debt is financially smart. Once everybody does it, it becomes economically dodgy.

by Leather-Cloud 2 days ago

Rich people tell us to save and that we should live within our means. Then, once we start, they complain about it, causing a recession. they then get bailed out, and we have to suffer

by myron07 2 days ago

Exactly. When people don't spend, the economy slows, which means more layoffs, more places closing because of lack of clientele, etc. Then everyone wonders why their favorite restaurants and coffee houses went out of business.

You're right that a lot of people do this. You're wrong that the average person can still get by on the average salary to the degree that they could in the past. there's been a ton of research into this, wages haven't kept up with inflation or productivity for many decades. housing affordability is that an all-time low for many decades. a lot of things that people considered basic are now out of reach of the average person on the average salary. unfortunately, the people you're talking about consider themselves average when they clearly are not. and this is the problem with the concept of average: everyone thinks they're average. everyone thinks they're middle class, even the wealthy will tell you that. there are numbers for all of these things, but most people tend to ignore all that stuff. stats are for nerds right? lol anyways, I actually think your opinion is quite popular. I hear this a lot, I've heard it my whole life.

I impulsively bought a 500 dollar coffee maker. I don't even drink coffee. I make 15/hr

I impulsively buy no ads for any game that I can see myself playing for more than a few hours total. I also make 15/hr.

Nah there's many many of us who live way under our means and enjoy saving for the future especially for our kids - it's just that the stupid are often the most vocal and visual

by Prudent-Speaker-5588 2 days ago

Yup. That was me, as well. I went from quite poor to in grad school with a ton of savings in a few years, basically from homelessness-trauma working (you don't turn down work when you've had a brush with homelessness), and being frugal by American standards (I really don't think living within my means is that hard).

by Beaulahkuphal 2 days ago

I think it's pretty unpopular considering how many people I heard claim to be struggling but somehow go on trips, watch plays, etc

by Logical-Football-944 2 days ago

but does everyone actively seek the 50% over their means lifestyle? not sure of that. OP might be talking abt the few people who do

by Brave-Machine 2 days ago

Having lived under the poverty line, I honestly have to agree. I would say I felt bad for about a third of the people who were in the same boat as me, and absolutely exhausted by the remaining two thirds. Black hole mindsets—you could launch endless resources at them (and the state does, contrary to popular belief), and they will a. Make those resources disappear b. With absolutely nothing to show for it, and c. Loudly complain that no one has ever tried to help them.

by Beaulahkuphal 2 days ago

But are you able to save much?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yes together we save just short of 12k a year.

Not everyone is as good at the things you find easy.

" poor ppl are poor because they spend money ever!" Such an entitled take.

by Objective_Iron 2 days ago

its an entitled take when your too ignorant to actually read it and understand what hes saying.... Many people make foolish financial decisions, unnecesary purchases, and bad debts that could be avoided.

by steveskiles 2 days ago

Sure, but that's not what he meant. It's not about making foolish financial decisions. It's about having to cut back on normal life spendings like groceries. Many people can't even afford healthy food with their salaries, which should be affordable for anyone. And yes, there are of course these people that generally don't know how to use money, but that's not the case for many others.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

their opinion is different

by Brave-Machine 2 days ago

I say this is half true after inflation. Precovid so many people do not know how to handle themselves with money and they make themselves "poor" living outside their means. What you're saying is unpopular and will have so many salty AF cumsoomers foaming at the mouth

by Waste_Soil_5676 1 day ago

just cause you can afford champagne don't mean you need to be drinking it every day.

Save one penny more than you spend and you'll always be rich

budgets are like cookie dough, they expand to fill the pan.

by Brave-Machine 1 day ago

My budget is laid out nice and neat. Everything beyond it is "Do whatever the hell you want with" money. Granted, part of my budget includes saving and investing.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes but not one of those people used their wealth to manipulate the system to pass laws that make it so they do not have to pay taxes and caused a scarcity of government resources making certain that America will never make progress. The poor are bad so we do not need to help them is just another way of protecting that system. Fix the cause of the scarcity and we go a long way toward fixing america and the world.

by Ok-Exercise-737 1 day ago

"Unpopular" just isn't the word for this one. "Hated" is MUCH more accurate.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Not an unpopular opinion here. There are a lot of people who make a decent wage but suffer from the green eyed monster once they spot someone appearing to be doing better (without knowing that person or family's situation). They then put themselves into an awkward position to "live that life" and then complain that it's all too hard.

by Starkwilhelm 1 day ago

your friends spending habits ≠ everyone's reality. plenty of folks out here working multiple jobs, avoiding restaurants completely, and STILL struggling to make rent because housing costs have gone up like 40% while wages stayed basically the same

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Saving money inhibits your ability to live normally. It's not wrong for people to want more than basic needs. You really need to live the ramen, PB & J, and public library lifestyle if you're in a life/death predicament where you have to save as much as possible.

by Ok_Unit 1 day ago

All most people want is security (a house they own), to have it be in a safe neighbourhood and to be able to afford to raise kids optimally, which means earning enough for your wife to be a housewife m. Do you know how unaffordable that has become?
