'Mr Brightside' is an anthem for stupid people that don't actually appreciate the song. amirite?

Regardless of the lyrics, the tune makes people happy. If the artist put sad lyrics with a happy tune then that's on them. I'm sure they are crying all of the way to the bank about all of the "disrespectful" people responding to a very upbeat tune.

I'll jam to "Hey Ya!", even if the lyrics are almost existentially depressing.

Yeah I hate that song too.

Yea! In fact screw that band!

Of their peers, what song do you think is great?

Fully agree I think it's well said however the one thing I'd like to add is it's less about the meaning more about the time period it represents it's more of a generational thing, that song was always on the radio at a certain point in time it's nostalgic i think it's more about that then the meaning.

When it comes on at a wedding all the guys exit the dance floor and the women just jump up and down and sing to each other.

They're happy because they like the song, not because they think the story in the song is happy. This has some real "to be fair you have to have a very high IQ to understand Mr Brightside" vibes

I've anyways interpreted it as a man's anxiety and jealousy getting the best of him because he thinks she's cheating on him but it doesn't actually happen It was all in my head Being the line that shows that imo

That's a pretty solid point, not gunna lie.

It doesn't change your point that it's a sad song tbf.

Iconic and surprisingly difficult guitar riff. Absolute smasher on drums. Underrated band in terms of talent. One of the best hits of their generation. The kind of song that doesn't require a lyrical analysis to be appreciated. The guitar, drums and singer's voice and delivery are all that's needed to jam out to this beloved song.

I really hate when I hear it at weddings, it makes me roll my eyes everytime. I

Meanwhile, people in real life: Hey dude, how's it going?

You should write a book about things that make people happy but shouldn't because they don't understand what those things really mean.

well said. can't imagine how brutal it is hearing it hundreds of times etc. Reminds me Springsteen's "Glory Days" - a lot of people think its a fond look back at the good ole days and it's actually about the brutal realities of life as you progress through the system.

Zombie is a song about two kids getting killed by an IED during the troubles. Irish rugby fans sing it joyously at matches. Doesn't really matter what the song is about, it's about the joy that it brings to the people when they sing it. Fun song to sing is a fun song to sing

-looks at its followup/sequel song of sorts, Miss Atomic Bomb- Add another one for the interpretations side of things. It's downright depressing in hindsight. Though if Mr. Brightside taken on its own, the most positive I can think of is that the singer moved on from the events, HOPEFULLY in a good way. But pair it with that, yeah.

Not only that, but on the album, 'Mr.Brightside' follows a song called 'Jenny was a friend of mine' where the narrator is being interrogated by the police for the death/disappearance of his friend Jenny, it is implied that the narrator killed Jenny. Definitely puts Mr.Brightside in a different light.

Or is it possible that some people don't have their head so far up their ass that they can take 3 minutes out of their day to just jump around and enjoy a banger tune while simultaneously realising that the lyrics are describing a sad situation? We've been doing this since music existed...just because people don't choose to wallow in angst it doesn't mean they're too stupid to contextualise a pop song.

I've never heard of someone be pretentious about the killers. Good job, I guess?
