+51 US college admissions are unfair and terribly designed, amirite?

this is an incredibly popular opinion

Your primary issue seems to be that rich people can use their wealth to cheat. Life is going to come as a bit of a shock to you once you get done with school

by Open-Rub 1 day ago

I myself am actually on a wealthier side. It being "just how the life is" is not making it any more morally acceptable

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Ok, so how would you like it done?

by melliemorissett 1 day ago

I think we should go the opposite way. Entrance exams, GPA and personal essays only. That way it's more fair.

GPA isn't fair. Kid going to a good high school will often have a lower GPA than a kid going to an easy high school, yet Kid A knows way more. That's why SATs shouldn't be optional. That's such a dumb recent participation awards for all movement. No kid left behind turns into everyone is kept behind.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah unfortunately life isn't fair at least this way it's equal criteria. None of this is fair for dumber kids but it is what it is i suppose.

SATs being an optional was a change that came because of COVID. For two years, kids couldn't take the SATs. Do they not deserve to go to college because of what was happening in the world?

by sydnie46 1 day ago

As I said that's how it's done in most of the world and I don't think it's perfect but it's definitely better than what they do now

All the tests are biased towards white culture. The only universal part is math

by Websterbaumbach 1 day ago

If that's the case why do Asian score on average a 1200 on SAT but white Americans only score 1000 on average? Are Asian more versed on white culture than white Americans?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So you just want the SATs to be harder. What % of the application is currently the SATs and GPA in the IVY Leagues?

by melliemorissett 1 day ago

That's what they tell us to make it seem fair but that's a very idealistic scenario. Do you really think an essay written by a student on their own is going to be rated higher than an essay written with help of a professional essay writer just because the first one's more personal ? There is literally 0 transparency, how are we supposed to know how they "recalculate the GPA" ? As you mentioned lying in extracurriculars is only caught if it's something absurd.

Why do you expect private elite universities to be held to an impossible standard of fairness? Morals alone while good aren't giving elite universiteis larger endowments or social clout, which is what they care about.

Just be half black half Native American and be a member of the debate team.. boom you're in

by Aggressive-Ebb 1 day ago

The actual unpopular opinion: randomly pick kids once they meet certain test score standards.

by ohaley 1 day ago

How would you do it differently?

Let's start with explaining "bets of intentions "

by Cultural-Singer 1 day ago

The college graduation rate of other students from your high school influences future acceptance rates. Colleges want to see degrees completed. The goal of acceptance is to accept the highest percentage of students that will complete degrees. All the data they capture is used to calculate the probability of you graduating. It's education. It's also a business.

90% of US colleges require very little to get in. They just want your tuition $. One university I know requires a 19 ACT score and a 1.9 GPA. Ivy schools are different, but most colleges will let you in the door with barely any qualifications and let you pay all the $ you can to take remedial Algebra and retake World Lit a bunch of times until you pass it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I mean, we could just let people go to whatever college they want instead of enforcing an aggressively racist and classist system

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Fun fact: holistic review was invented as a way to keep Jews out of Ivy's. I don't think admission should be based solely on test scores, but in the 1920s , prestigious institutions were sick of Jews consistently doing well and getting into their schools so they changed the system so they could learn more about you and reject you without having to say why

by sydnie46 1 day ago

you can get good test scores by studying. There are many free tools, even your English teacher, who can help with essays. Nothing should be barring you from participating in extra-curriculars in HS.

I have a solution, Community College, way cheaper, they take anyone basically.
