I don't think defying gravity is about the artistry. It's about how it makes people feel, how it fits the moment and feelings of the character at that time and how difficult it is to single well. That's why people like it

How it makes you feel is defined by the artistry. That's the entire point of music theory as an inherent component to human interpretation of sensory data It comes at the right time in a well structured narrative but as a result, any song would have done good in that slot as long as it has 1 difficult note. It's impressive to see someone good at their job, but defying gravity is a boringly composed song that exists only to set up that one note that could've been used much effectively if composed differently This has been my Roman Empire for years at this point because Wicked might be on my list of least favourite musicals and this is a big reason why. The songs are so basic, so assign and devoid of interesting composition with the weirdest adapted plot I've ever seen, there is nothing for me to latch onto. It ain't Hades town, it aint phantom, it ain't even High School Musical 3

I'll double down on your unpopular opinion, I think Wicked is 100% overrated and can't wait for this stupid movie to be reduced to the dollar store dvd shelf.

I feel like Defying Gravity never hits the crescendo it potentially could. For that, it is an annoying listen. Like an itch that's just out of reach.

Exactly this. Maybe a key change. Maybe the way Defying Gravity is sung could be changed or altered over the course of the song. But it just feels like wasted potential.
