+49 Americans don't know that the English don't care they gained independence. amirite?

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

The difference is that America is a younger nation and the war for independence was a defining point in the country's history, whereas for England it was just another offshore colonial war.

"You still sore you lost to us?" Dude, how old do you think I am?

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Ok so online eye poking.

by Educational_Lie_8386 3 weeks ago

Because England is responsible for more independence days than any other country

by Sensitive_Bus 3 weeks ago

What part of America did you go to where people ask you "are you sore that you lost?". Sounds like BS unless you came to America and visited a small town full of hillbillies

by powlowskijamar 3 weeks ago

Florida and Washington State. Usually in small breakfast places along our road trips. To be fair most people were lovely! I love it when people hear us and do an accent back. Also p.s. - why cars so BIG?

"For you, it was a defining moment in your life" "For me it was a Tuesday"

Great quote from a movie I didn't like but enjoy a lot now.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Doesn't care about American independence. Cares about having to hear about it lot. Not difficult to understand.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

As a Dane I assure you, the same happens to me, when I go to the UK. And most likely its a fun joke and not an actual question.

by Wide_Week_9930 3 weeks ago

Well it's not like this came out of nowhere, it was brought up by someone else and OP is pointing out how strange it is (in their opinion) to do that. It sounds like it happened multiple times in one trip.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

It's not very strange, it's almost guaranteed a joke highlighting the historical ties between the two nations. Its banter. People from Britain do the same in my country, for the very same reasons. But he is right that no one does it in Germany, because it's a massive taboo and considered extremely rude there.

by Wide_Week_9930 3 weeks ago

That's where I call BS. Unless you're exclusively hanging out with folks younger than 18-22 and around the 4th no one is going to be constantly bringing up the war of independence.

by Educational_Lie_8386 3 weeks ago

They're joking. It's a joke. They don't you care either.

by Richard78 3 weeks ago

Nah man, I've talked to people in the US that mean this dead serious and I am not even from Britain. I've also had a British bus driver tell me that he isn't going to transport me because I'm German. This was in 2009. I'm sorry my friends but this was before my time, even my dad was born after WW2. There are strange people. Here, in the US, in the UK, Everywhere.

The first time I heard about it was when I watching an American cartoon as a kid. It hasn't come up since. You're right, no one in England cares but it's important to Americans so I guess it's fine to humour them.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

It's a fun little poke in the eye. We're only a 200ish years old immature country; what'd you expect?

by Educational_Lie_8386 3 weeks ago

Our sarcastic little teenager

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Only a serious sore point for retirees. The war ended half a century ago.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

England cared quite a bit at the time. If you think they didn't, I'd recommend you read The Men Who Lost America by Andrew O'Shaughnessy which goes into some detail about the efforts the British put into winning the war, and despite their military superiority, how it would have been nearly impossible to win. Not only that, but Charles Fox and the opposition were blatantly pro-American for their own reasons. So the English may not care to discuss that big L nowadays, but it was indeed a major issue at the time.

by quinn60 3 weeks ago

You didn't really lose to America. You lost to France, which given your centuries long rivalry, should make you even sorer. The French are the ones who defeated the British fleet at the Battle of Chesapeake and they're the ones mainly responsible for defeating the British army. If not for France, the US is just swampy Canada.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Nobody actually thinks you care, some people just think it's a funny, super original joke. Take it easy. Don't make us do it again

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

My sweet darlings strayed so wrong. Your president elect is a funny, super original joke hehe.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Sounds like you care

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Lmfao…. Sure…. You don't care…..

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

The difference is for England they lost so many battles it's hard to remember all of them. It's a bigger deal for us because it was one war that gained us our independence.

by shayneconn 3 weeks ago

Never said we were good haha

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

That's true in England we call the forth of July "sod it we'd rather keep India" day.

by Denesikausten 3 weeks ago

Never crosses my mind from one day to the next. I wasn't there.

Americans, this nonsense is what the Scottish, (Northern) Irish, and Welsh people have to put up with all the time - you're better off with your independence.

by Tate64 3 weeks ago

Many Americans don't even know how or from whom we gained our independence. You're really underestimating how dumb some of us are.

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Ahh you got it from us in the motherland I'm sure!

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

When we lived in LA we'd get asked what we were doing for Independence Day! Errrr - nothing

by Stephanmertz 3 weeks ago

you still sore you lost to us? Well which time are you supposed to be sore about? American revolution or War of 1812? Either one we won

by Anonymous 3 weeks ago

Dude no one cares.

by Danielleluettge 3 weeks ago

Yeah, I wouldn't care too if I got humiliated and sent home from the land I conquered.

by Visual_Basis 3 weeks ago

Dont care much about it, americans are just way too cocky about their own history and blatantly ignorant about what their country actually is today.
