I think enough people use the word "alot" at this point that it's gonna get added to the Scrabble dictionary and eventually become a legitimate spelling of the word (or two words).

When I was little they literally taught us that's a correct way to spell it. Probably why there's a ton of people that do.

at least with common mistakes like to/too/two and affect/effect, they're pronounced the same. loose and lose are not
