+53 Belle Gibson is not an evil mastermind, amirite?

Telling lies to people with cancer, for money, isn't just 'Instagram hustling'.

She's evil enough to prey on people's insecurities for money.

Nobody thinks Gibson was a mastermind, let alone an evil one. The only reason the outrage reached the level that it did was that she took advantage of the most vulnerable people - sick people, people dying of cancer. And yes, Penguin and Apple should've done far more due diligence on her before publishing her "work".

Yea her lack of accountability was probably the worst thing, even now she refuses to acknowledge the damage

She preyed on people who were sick and scared for their lives by pretending to be in the same shoes. It's very easy to see why people wanted to believe her. They're desperate for hope. As for her publisher, wasn't she just writing a healthy cookbook? So long as she didn't say "this chia pudding will 100% cure your cancer," there was nothing to fact check about the book. I agree people should be more cynical when something seems too good to be true, but I also see why no one would ask a cancer survivor to prove their illness, which is exactly what she was banking on. And she wasn't the first person to make claims like this (forgoing medical advice for alternative treatments and getting better). It does happen. Even if everyone did call her out immediately and she never made it as far as she did, not being able to go through with your horrible idea doesn't make it or you any less horrible.
