+48 Commander ruined Magic the Gathering, amirite?

by jenifer96 15 hours ago

I've been to 3 local shops in a wide net area where I live and have yet to meet a single player willing to play anything other than Commander or some form of Limited format. It's taken over the game in most areas. You have to go online to play traditional Magic, which is the more fun game.

3 shops in your area is not most of anything.

Pretty sure everyone knows at this point that Commander is the most played format for in person games across the country, so while I'm sure there are some small exceptions, it's pretty much the way it is.

This. I played a long time ago, but fell off. My coworkers started really playing when commanders started, and that convinced me to pull my cards back out.

I can't imagine watching a game of Commander and thinking man, that looks fun!

Commercialism ruined MtG. Turning every single format into cash grabs has made the game so much worse.

That's every game though, unfortunately. Pokemon isn't even a game anymore, it's just gambling.

Pokemon Go is, not the actual games.

They even ruined Pokemon Go! 😂

Yep, unpopular opinion. Commander at the level most people play (not competitive) is by far the more complex and interesting format, with more variability to its games.

I'd argue is significantly less complex of a format. Part of the complexity of deck building is finding the right balance of efficiency in the confines of 60 cards. Which spells do you run 4 of? What can go to 2-3? Can I cut a land or two? Etc.,

Having more copies of one card is more complex than singleton?

by Anonymous 12 hours ago

Absolutely. Because it's a science. It's about balance and requires playtesting. It encourages you to play games, and it allows you to get to know every card. Singleton formats are just "ope, that looks like a good enough card" or "I guess that'll work with insert commander name". There's no real science to it.

Commander maybe ruined 60 card competitive formats at LGSes, but saying it ruined MTG on the whole is a wild take. Lots of people are playing magic now, just not the way you prefer.
