+35 Changing Your Opinion Shouldn't Be Considered Hypocrisy, amirite?

by Anonymous 19 hours ago

Changing opinions isn't hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is acting in a way that goes against your stated beliefs.

And that's okay as well because actions aren't always black and white. People assess their actions by weighing the pros and cons. Sometimes, you might choose to act against your beliefs when the drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

Actually, sticking to your guns isn't about looking consistent—it's about being reliable and trustworthy. When someone like Nikhil Kamath does a complete 180 on an issue like housing, it's not just a simple change of mind. People who followed his advice on renting may feel misled or abandoned because they trusted his judgment. Calling it hypocrisy isn't unfair; it's holding him accountable. People depend on the consistency of public figures and experts, especially when it comes to significant life decisions like housing.

Really depends on the motivation.

Yup, the statement " i change my option because xxxxxx" is very valid. Contrast to people changing opinion without reason.

For your example, if Nikhil Kamath admitted he's wrong then I agree he's not hypocrit...just naïve and/or ignorant (assuming not outright decieving).

If you change your mind and state it clearly — you are not a hypocrite. If you fear being called a hypocrite because of that, you have much bigger issues to worry than about your integrity. 'There is an unspoken pressure to cling to past opinions, as if changing our minds is a sign of inconsistency.' — nope, nobody pressures you. Everything you speak of is lack of confidence and fear of public opinion.

True hypocrisy is having contradictory beliefs at the same time. Having them at different times would just mean you changed.

Thats why its an opinion. Only time you can't change is when its a fact. Even scientists call it a Theorem when they have doubts. Changing your stand is not hypocrisy when proven wrong. its the right thing to do.

The people agreeing with you don't know the definition of hypocrisy. It's not changing your opinion. "the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense." Changing your opinion is just changing your opinion. People are free to do that at any time. Its telling people they shouldn't eat meat while they eat a burger.
