-25 An empty fridge is better than a full fridge, amirite?

by Conroyjosephine 4 months ago

You do have a point in regards to the prevention of waste. But if you are diligent about grocery management you can keep using stuff in a cycle so it is always stocked with fresh food.

by bria56 4 months ago

Yep. There are two of us and we almost always cook meals for four, then eat the leftovers on offset days so we're not repeating a meal two days in a row. Plus some ingredients just last a lot longer, having the same bell peppers, green onions, cheese, etc. in my fridge for over a week doesn't mean I'm wasting food. It means I need to plan on making a dish that uses them.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You know what, I don't particularly find satisfaction in thinking about the bowl of leftovers that has been in the back of my fridge for too long. You may be onto something.

by Fmcclure 4 months ago

We've all got that random covered dish at the back of the fridge, when eventually you pull it out and you're like... what was this ? Lol

by Stacey55 4 months ago

I pulled out a little Tupperware of sauerkraut I'd forgotten about from Thanksgiving from waaaay back in my fridge the other day. I don't recommend opening the lid on months old sauerkraut….

by Anonymous 4 months ago

idk man. i think youre taking "empty" too literally.

by Icy_Cranberry 4 months ago

Way too literally. I'm talking perishables….. meats, veggies etc

by Conroyjosephine 4 months ago

That doesn't change my general point. Even disregarding less perishable items etc., it still has nothing to do with wasting food. If someone plans their food a week ahead, fine; as I understand it, that's not uncommon in the US at least. But the notion that all of it needs to be exactly consumed during that week to avoid food wastage is just nonsensical.

by Mjacobson 4 months ago

okkk. i mean generally, fresh food loses its freshness in about 7 days, and to me, it makes sense to do shopping the same day each week for routines sake. idk what youre doing bro.

by Icy_Cranberry 4 months ago

It doesn't make sense. That's why it's dumb.

If you know anything about lean six sigma you'll realize why you're wrong.

by flakin 4 months ago

Six sigma is a blight on American manufacturing corporations, disgusting to see people are applying it to their personal lives

by Anonymous 4 months ago

This is probably someone who lives off pre boxed dinners.....I can guarantee within a fraction of a percent that this person could barely pull off cookin ramen, I mean, if you completely empty you're fridge you don't have many ingredients, no fresh herbs, protein stocks, fresh meats, butter, etc. The whole thing sounds like adhd 20something who is unskilled in a kitchen.

by Alone-Confidence 4 months ago

I agree completely only buy perishables for the next two days maximum

by CharmingStand4628 4 months ago

I work at a desk so I started grocery shopping everyday actually, just got the walk and fresh air, it's a 7 minute walk, sometimes I just grab like 2 items but I've had my walk.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

People who live in the city and can walk to a grocery store with 5-10 min can do this. There's a reason people like walkable cities.

by flakin 4 months ago

sounds like something that only a person living by them selves can derive satisfaction from.

by ometz 4 months ago

harsh lol

by Anonymous 4 months ago

when you live with others you're probably not going to see an empty fridge

by Kuhlmanewald 4 months ago

My fridge has been empty pretty much since I moved in 10 years ago 😂 living alone it really isn't worth filling the fridge at all.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Wait let him cook This only valid if you in the mood to go grocery shopping at the end of every week tho

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I definitely agree, but for a little different reasons. Personally I get too overwhelmed with a lot of choices and a lot of the food used to go bad and we could just not eat it.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Gotta love those end of week leftover stews and omelettes too

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Yes, respect

by Rickhagenes 4 months ago

I usually restock when I'm halfway though my last shopload. I'm never wasting food and make sure to eat everything before it goes bad but I also hate having that feeling of "Ugh... the only thing I have in the fridge is something I dont want to eat or I can heat up some cheap tinned stuff".

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I don't like having an empty fridge, but I have to admit that's where i'm being creative when I'm cooking

by Superb_Shower 4 months ago

I mean maybe fresh veg meat etc but don't you try to keep stuff like butter, cheese milk etc in there most of the time. And that's not even thinking about sauces, pickles and other condiments.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

What do you people eat that only lasts a week in the fridge?

by Jaded-Cod 4 months ago

Nah, I'm doing something wrong as a parent if there's ever a moment where my kid has no food to eat at home

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Yes, don't forget to feed your friend. Full friend = Happy friend

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Sounds more like OCD, but I getcha.

by Alexandriapagac 4 months ago

My goal every week, freezer too.

by No-Interest-9843 4 months ago

I feel like you don't live paycheck to paycheck and live alone. Which, good for you, kinda jealous. But speaking from a "being poor" perspective, like most of the country, I am NOT happy when my fridge is empty.

by Alone-Confidence 4 months ago

Obviously does not live in the back of beyond. What happens if it snows heavily. You get sick and cannot get out for a week. Petrol stations have no petrol, so I use my car when absolutely necessary, and grocery shopping is not a good reason. Etc. Etc. Had neighbours complain that they were hungry, as they could not go out shopping, when we had 8" of snow. Ridiculous!

by alexaschimmel 4 months ago

An empty fridge uses more power. If you open it the cold air comes out. If it's full everything cold stays inside so it'll take less energy

by Anonymous 4 months ago

An empty fridge takes more energy to keep cold than a full fridge. Enjoy wasting energy

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Idea is good, but that means I have to go for grocery shopping and I hate that.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I agree. This is what works for my household. I always have the staples that last more than a week but for my main meals throughout, I shop every week (sometimes 2). I find it beneficial because most grocery stores change sales every week so I do my shopping concentrating on what's on sale for that week. Works great for me.

by emardlenna 4 months ago

Throughout history, running out of food was generally not considered a good position to be in.

by BeneficialAttorney 4 months ago

When you buy food, is it all pre-packaged, ready-to-eat meals? Everything you buy is just heated up in a microwave? No fruits or vegetables? That's a yuck diet

by Anonymous 4 months ago

i like this. is it a privileged take?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Not privileged; just stupid.

by Orvalblanda 4 months ago

Very privileged.

by Odahegmann 4 months ago

You know what at first I was going to disagree but you make a lot of sense.

by Colejaydon 4 months ago

How? Lots of things in the average refrigerator lasts longer than a week. Also there can be an overlap. What are you buy a big juice container or something on day six, and you want an empty fridge on day seven?
