+17 The government should not be involved in marriage at all. amirite?

by elysegottlieb 4 months ago

Yes but he's saying the government shouldn't recognize any marriages. I honestly agree. Marriage should be separate from a contractual financial partnership.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Then what is it?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

What is marriage? It's a cultural ceremony like a quinceñara.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You know you can still do that, right? Dont want to get married in the eyes of the governemnt? Then dont, have a wedding with all 4 other people if you want. You wont get a tax break, nor anything else. Dont take away options from people, cause you dont want to pick it.

by Elsekreiger 4 months ago

Not getting the tax and other benefits is exactly my problem. It's not right that your taxes are lower than mine because you chose to ask uncle Sam for permission and I didn't.

by elysegottlieb 4 months ago

Getting married in the eyes of the law isnt asking uncle sam for permission to love someone. Its saying to the government "yo we are spouses and share assets and duty. We have proven this to you so you know we are not lying about this so give us the proper tax breaks that come with it" It has nothing to do with love, but proving benefit to society.

by Elsekreiger 4 months ago

this

by Gullible-Plenty 4 months ago

LGBTQ people would definitely say that getting married is asking the government permission to love. And inter-racial couples, once upon a time.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

When you apply for a marriage license, which could get denied, you are absolutely asking for permission. Also how do two married people benefit society any more than the same two people, but unmarried?

by elysegottlieb 4 months ago

Do you and your partner make the same? Then there isn't really any tax benefit to marriage.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Can we opt out of paying extra taxes to cover the tax break and the cost of keeping marriage licenses on file at the courthouse?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You can still sign a prenuptial contract and have a will

by Anonymous 4 months ago

But you can designate that any time to anyone without being married. Creating a will is much easier than getting married.

by elysegottlieb 4 months ago

And if you don't have a will there are laws that cover who gets your stuff, why do you want to exclude spouses from those rights?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You won't just need a will, but also a healthcare proxy and power of attorney. Obtaining all of that is definitely more time consuming and expensive than a marriage license.

by mcculloughart 4 months ago

Marriage is not a religious act unless you make it religious lmao it is not by its nature religious.

by JacketWest 4 months ago

Our word for marriage comes from religion I guess but people have gotten married in nearly all cultures across history. It isn't inherently religious

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Most laws had a religious background so...

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I don't care about people's commitment issues. Married people shouldn't have lower taxes than unmarried people, regardless of the reason they choose not to marry.

by elysegottlieb 4 months ago

That's because married people have to file jointly, and there are some married people who do things traditionally, such as the husband works and the woman takes care of the home (or vice versa nowadays). Combine that with having children that you have to support, they should get a tax break. Single people just have to worry for themselves so there's no one that they have to support. If you do have to support someone ( like myself), file as head of household and you can get that tax break as well.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

consenting adults is even italicized, for people like you that don't read

by elysegottlieb 4 months ago

How do you enforce that without a government?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I get the argument that why should the government have a say in something that's ultimately a personal or religious commitment? The idea of no state involvement means no tax benefits, no legal privileges, and no restrictions on who marries who (as long as it's consenting adults)

by No_Seat_4081 4 months ago

By consent age concept you are applying laws to marriage. I dont think the laws can stay really out of it

by Anonymous 4 months ago

It's literally a legal contract lol the government has to be involved

by Melany57 4 months ago

i hear you and government should be involved in less things in general but this is one that actually makes sense. especially when it comes to assets and beneficiaries when someone dies, it's helpful to have a governing body to oversee

by ItchyMilk 4 months ago

A lot of Hmong people seem to do Hmong marriages, where they just do their Hmong wedding and don't do any legal govt stuff with it

by Alarmed_Advisor5726 4 months ago

Ok, let us assume we have it your way. What happens when a couple (or higher order thouple) decides to get divorced?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Marriage is mainly about the right people getting your stuff when you die. Making sure the wife and kids are taken care of if something happens to you. This is why polygamy is out of fashion in the west, it complicates things too much when the main guy dies. Times are changing and marriage is too but the laws around it won't budge.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I get that but you can already designate who gets your stuff, without getting married, and creating a will and assigning payees is much much easier than getting married.

by elysegottlieb 4 months ago

Agreed. I will never understand people wanting to get married. I had no idea what a sham it was until I did it. It's completely unfair and barberic

by reillygreen 4 months ago

North america should adopt the system in Quebec, Canada. Only place that recognizes civil unions without the implication of common law marriage

by Ricky50 4 months ago

Don't get married.

by janiyablanda 4 months ago

Marriage doesn't mean anything if the government isn't involved. It's a contract and a tax break. It's neither without government. I otherwise agree.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Well…there is one area the government should still be involved. If one person takes the last name of the other, then there are processes involved. Some places require a valid reason and, marriage being one, requires proof. Otherwise, separate from the personal identity change of the married person, I agree. Although divorce also brings in some legal consequences.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You don't need to get married to change your name in any state

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Never said you did. I said you need a valid reason to, and marriage is one of those reasons.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Marriage and fertility are very much a public policy concern of the government for population control.

by marianakohler 4 months ago

So we are encouraging more population by giving tax breaks to married people? I always assumed it was to incentivize parents to not go get the milk.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

goverment wats more people so more people pay taxes...

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I agree. Why are taxes and insurance and things like that tied to marital status? Government is most certainly involved if you have to register and pay for a marriage license.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Marriage is literally a way to invite the govt into your relationship and allow them into the finances. Anyone who thinks marriage is anything other than a financial contract is a sheep.
