To me it's about balance. Minimalism works when it's done intentionally to showcase a different element of design. Maximalism works when it contributes to the feel of the medium. But without intention, neither serve a purpose that would add to the appreciation of the work they are trying to highlight

You realise that it's not 1 cover per country, right? There are multiple cover designs out there for each book, especially for longer and more popular series like the Wheel of Time. I think the vast majority of sck fi and fantasy readers would prefer more beautiful covers, I certainly do! So I make an intentional choice to buy books with the covers I like, problem solved!

I personally look at this like genres of music. I like some stuff from just about every genre and dislike some stuff from every genre. Minimalist writing can be great, it can also suck. Same with all other styles. I guess it's more about how effectively the author uses their chosen style to create a reading experience that expresses their ideas in a dynamic and compelling way. Just my opinion.

Our home decor especially in our living room as dark cottage core ish, as the trend word described it, so there's nothing plain in sight even books have to have striking covers to fit in.
