The people most vulnerable to propaganda are the people convinced they're immune to it.

Nuh uh I am immune

It's pretty easy to differentiate facts from opinions. If you can prove it, it's a fact. If you can't prove it, it's an opinion.

by Jarodwisoky 2 days ago

The issue here is you're assuming you have access to correct facts. If you're trying to form an opinion on say Gaza for example and you're not actually there seeing whats going on but the Palestinians say 50,000 dead but the Israelis' say no no its only 2k dead and some injured you don't have a way to personally verify the truth. That's where disinformation campaigns and propaganda go hand in hand. Even educated people who think they are immune to propaganda because they can tell a fact from an opinion aren't immune to being lied to.

There's this concept about how we humans can't even differentiate several kinds of truth. Like how "truths" vary from one person to another. Some people can't even agree on certain facts like flat earthers for example.

Why don't people who believe they can fly ever try taking off from the ground?

by Jarodwisoky 2 days ago

It seems you're saying that because one has beliefs, that it is because of propaganda. I'm not so sure this is how beliefs work at their core.

That's why observation and identifying patterns are key. One can't be naive by coming from a place of logical reasoning.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yes but I think logical reasoning can only get you so far. There are certain ideas that you can't arrive to just by "logical reasoning" love is a good example. A mothers love for her child. Or the concept of self sacrifice. Not all "truths" can be arrived at just by logical reasoning.

If we're going that far back then we learn from conditional behaviour, I guess I am meaning in the context of adulthood where we make our own choices, rational or not.

So you're saying you can't arrive at some ideas just by logical reasoning

by pearl48 2 days ago

And some people lack that, clearly.

I remember first year like it was yesterday.

This is literally how humans work, no one is immune because we aren't built to be. You can simplify it all the way down to evolutionary instinct; we absorb the lessons, good or bad, from past experiences. Fire = bad. During life you do this passively and that's fundamentally how propaganda works.

Thats not true, my favourite YouTubers told me so...

Im not sure this is at all an unpopular opinion. Yeah no one is immune to taking bad information and basing their beliefs on it, we just need to all learn and teach critical thinking skills to learn to evaluate and combat it reguarly. One of the most interesting examples of this is some of the extreme Maga crowd when I say to them, "What is the red line that if trump crossed you'd definitely turn on him". Most I've asked this question to don't have an aswer. I couldn't not imagine myself not having that answer for any politician.

I believe I'm immune. I am skeptical of literally EVERYTHING I see online, in person or otherwise, unless it's just a known logical fact. Even if the information is coming from a source that's known for being trustworthy. Every person or entity has an ulterior motive. Whether it be innocent or evil. It is impossible to convince me of anything. I do my own research and come to my own conclusion.

by ConsiderationFirm 1 day ago

If you do research then you are being convinced of things, unless you're literally conducting the studies yourself.

Very well said.
