Countertake : waitstaff should be able to take your order in the most efficient way possible.

Writing down orders in shorthand takes no time at all

by Alone-Tomatillo7752 2 weeks ago

More time than just memorizing

Countercounterpoint: depending on how you define efficient, writing it down could be more efficient. If you're a week 2 waiter and don't have a good memory, writing it down reduces the rate of mistaken orders

Which is usually by writing it down

there are techniques to do it right. it‘s not even rocket science, just mnemo tricks you can learn and train.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not necessarily

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There's no need to when you have a limited menu and most people order the same thing.

This goes double for those "upscale" restaurants where the waitstaff is likely forced to do this to impress the customers. No restaurant has ever forced their servers to not write down orders. In more than one occasion this has happened to me and they screwed up the order for me or a friend. Orders get screwed up in restaurants all the time whether they're written down or not.

I reject your counterargument because it's unfalsifiable. It's a singular anecdote whose veracity I can't verify.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I don't care. Just don't screw it up

Wait staff should be able to take an order any way they please. Also, if you get my order wrong I do not have to tip. This is fair for everyone.

I just think you should order at the front and take a number and sit down and they bring your food over It's always fhe best You've ordered all your food, all paid then you stack your plates and leave. I don't understand why america needs personal service

If they can remember and it comes out right, who cares

by Wisokyrobyn 2 weeks ago

I think it's just because some people have that idea in their head, and a restaurant managers will then force that on their staff so they can look more impressive I suppose. But like the first person on here said, which ever way works best for the server where they can get the food out in an efficient manner, where everything is correct... works.

not everyone has something/everything go in one, out the other. tough concept I assume?

by BubblyDiet 2 weeks ago

Absolutely agree! And how do they not feel stupid when they come back to clarify something.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yeah I agree. I don't get the point in trying to remember everything, I'm sure some people with much fancier taste than myself would disagree but I don't really see a point to not writing it down

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

not try to*

by margarett99 2 weeks ago

ive never been to a restaurant where they didnt write orders down

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

First off i promise no restaurant is forcing staff to remember orders. Second i do agree with you i was a server for a long time and wrote down even the smallest things because you never know what might happen between table touches. So idk this is unpopular.
