-37 I personally feel like changing the race of a character is not necessarily a bad thing, it can even be good if done well. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Why because you have an issue with a fake character having more than one interpretation

by Dorcas38 1 month ago

Because it's lazy and laziness is one of the biggest problems Hollywood has had for the last ten years.

by Haunting_Pepper_1907 1 month ago

What does "it's lazy" mean in this context?

by SailConsistent7302 1 month ago

Taking a movie script that's already been written for a movie that's already been made (often more than once) race swapping couple of characters and calling it a day. Lazy. What was "created" there?

by Haunting_Pepper_1907 1 month ago

Oh so you're just going with the assumption that everything is just a copy/paste, 1:1 remake. Ok

by SailConsistent7302 1 month ago

Why is it lazy. They are going to do remakes one way or another, so why can't other ethnicities get jobs? because you can't allow yourself to see a black person play a fictional character where skin color doesn't really change anything

by Dorcas38 1 month ago

A remake is also lazy. If your response to me thinking it's lazy is the to low key accuse me of "not wanting to see a black eprosns play a fictional character" then you must actually work in Hollywood today because that's what those clowns do, blame consumers for not liking the product that THEY put out. If consumers don't like your product, it's not because the consumers are bad. It's because your product sucks ass. But hey, you're right, I must hate watching black people play fictional characters. I hate it so much that Collateral is one of my favorite movies. Three famous black actors. Go away clown.

by Haunting_Pepper_1907 1 month ago

You mean the show that was awful? You're using black people as a human shield for critizing bad writing.

by Haunting_Pepper_1907 1 month ago

Did you watch it? It sucked

by Equivalent-Waltz 1 month ago

Of course they didn't watch it. They can't even name the show. This is the problem with these media activists. They don't even go see the media that they call everyone racist for not seeing. Then they wonder why the movies fail?

by Haunting_Pepper_1907 1 month ago

Why not make your own fake character if skin color is THAT important to you?

by Piper64 1 month ago

I'm white, but thanks. I'm able to see why other ethnicities may want to be represented on screen. I fail to see why you think because Superman was written white, why being played by a black actor has any significant meaning to you, outside of racism

by Dorcas38 1 month ago

Its cultural appropriation. Its blackface for white ppl. Its literally being done for political reasons. There's a societal war on cis white men and that's why we seem unreasonably pissed about these attacks.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

A war against cis white men. Funny, I am one of those people and have not felt any attacks against me. I'm sorry the incel community has taken your pride away. Cry harder

by Dorcas38 1 month ago

The "if done well" in your title is the key here though. Hollywood very often doesn't do this well because they're coming from a disingenuous place when representing minorities. So they just do a palette swap on established characters and pat themselves on the back for appearing progressive. I think a shining example of doing very well changing established characters is the Spider-Man IP. So many different iterations change up characters' race and gender and literally no one bats an eye about it because they do a really good job of making it feel organic.

by schambergermyra 1 month ago

As much as making your own story would be good for a lot of people. The issue always goes back to marketing. That is because movies that are based off of other IP are guaranteed to have a following just based on the ip alone. The only way for those movies to have some relevance for the general public is if the movie is exemplary compared to what the average movie entails. Not to mention that movies themselves cost a pretty penny and the marketing for those movies are even more so than the ones with other ip's attached to it. Because people don't watch a movie they don't know exist

by Ernsercristophe 1 month ago

That is because there was a heavy amount of marketing that came with Moana, Same thing with Frozen. Not to mention that they are exceptional in quality as well. However their sequels despite having a lot lower quality, and is critically not well. Has already made huge profits for them An example for a movie that didn't get much marketing would be the "Strange world" which have loss them money

by Ernsercristophe 1 month ago

Oh most definitely, I agree with how much of the love is poured into Moana, however marketing is still marketing. And without it Moana would not be seen except by a small group of people. Sequels are highly profitable and are incredibly safe investments in the higher ups eyes therefore they are the one that are getting greenlit/allowed to be shown to the public. Shows cannot be green lit unless the higher ups says yes. So unless if they deemed it safe and profitable your show will not exist. No matter how passionate or full of love the show could have.

by Ernsercristophe 1 month ago

These race changes are inorganic it comes off as if they are just trying to appease people. The singer Brandy played Cinderella and there wasn't that much uproar. But the way and which this Snow White film was promoted it just rubbed people the wrong way.

by Character-Class397 1 month ago

There was no problem with its promotion. It's just that zegler couldn't keep her mouth shut.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

No one's offended but the casting ruined the movie

by Ok_Inspector 1 month ago

Because a half white girl who looks pretty damn white is playing Snow White. That's your issue

by Dorcas38 1 month ago

I agree, specifically for fictional stories. Personally though, I'm just tired of consistent remakes more than I care about race swapping. I want original stories that include leads from different ethnicities and cultures.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

The biggest issue for me is setting up the actors for racial abuse and offering no protection

by Head_Still 1 month ago

Yup yup

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Or just make your own characters. Something like Moana is a perfect example of how to do it the right way

by Different_Guava2177 1 month ago

Common argument. Thing is they do, and none of you « make your own ocs » people ever care to show up and support. Instead you see these characters receive just as much hate. Look at Miles Morales for example.

by heaneybettye 1 month ago

I don't appreciate you making assumptions about what I "support". Turning red, Soul, Moana, Encanto, big hero 6, etc. are all fantastic examples of original stories and characters that got TONS of support. The problem arises when a classic film or show is literally copy-pasted and the characters turn a different race simply for diversity sake, because that does absolutely nothing to tell stories of different cultures. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it's a step backwards for ethnic minorities.

by Different_Guava2177 1 month ago

People hate miles? Since when?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Why is it anyone job to "show up and support" anything? If you make a thing good, it will be popular. If your thing, movie book show game whatever, sucks, then no one is going to consume it.

by Haunting_Pepper_1907 1 month ago

People love Miles Morales ..?

by margarete77 1 month ago

"Just too iconic to make the change". This describes most of the race swaps that people are upset about

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Can we just leave characters the way they are? 😭🙏

by No-Detail-115 1 month ago

By this logic, Batman should still use guns. Grayson should still be the boy wonder, not the leader of the titans. Change is good.

by heaneybettye 1 month ago

Why don't we make Batman a 20 year old black woman?

by Ok_Inspector 1 month ago

Character development isn't the same as a frivolous race swap.

by Piper64 1 month ago

It's Myles Morales v Snow White

by Anonymous 1 month ago

This is a good example of how race has nothing to do with it

by Ok_Inspector 1 month ago

Yes.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Snow Black and the 7 Giants

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Being a different race doesn't necessarily mean you come from a different culture.

by herbert24 1 month ago

Wish people don't just give that deep of a damn tbh. Just go watch the og if you're disappointed with the current offering

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Where's the unpopular opinion? You lied to me

by Anonymous 1 month ago

So theres times where race swapping is ok or even good, 1) The change in race is actually considered in the story, how this would impact things. Doctor who did this well i think. 2) The production just decides that the actors dont need to look like there actual races, saw a great adaptation of david copper-field that did this Times it is bad: 1) This is an actual historical figure, especially when people may not realise the actor isnt meant to look like the actual person, Ie a black person playing queen elizebeth would be ok as everyone knows that there not meant to look like them. But a black person playing Cleopatra wouldn't work as many people would mistakly think cleopatra was black skinned. 2) The race is swapped for one character, but there made out to look like that character.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Every time this conversation pops up, I ask "How would you feel if they turned Black Panther into a white character" or "I think Ryan Gosling would make a great Martin Luther King!" Watch the hypocrisy unfold.

by Piper64 1 month ago

Ummmm....how is this an unpopular opinion? It seems to be what most people think.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Changing a character's attributes can be interesting, I agree, as long as it's not a form of discrimination. I'm not a fan of comics, but I know most superheroes have different versions with different gender, age, race, abilities, sexualities, etc. I don't see why that can't be expanded to other media.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

This is basically just the same take everyone wants. I don't think any character can be "too iconic", even if a character's race is important there's always an argument a good version that's another race possible to write. It's more difficult with some characters, but art is about doing what is difficult.

by Worth-Writer 1 month ago

This opinion shouldn't even be unpopular you're just changing the skin color

by Santadach 1 month ago

How is changing the skin color of fictional characters racist?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Because this individual skipped the mental part of their development where adults learn to communicate and understand different points of view without immediately lashing out like a child.

by PuzzleheadedSkill 1 month ago

It's not that's what I'm saying, this shouldn't be an unpopular opinion? If it's unpopular majority of people are racist?
