+50 The concept of standardized breeds is inherently harmful to animals, amirite?

Maybe, just maybe, people should buy breeds based on other factors than looks.

They should, but why keep dogs to artificial breeds at all? Surely there is a middle-point between "this is how this breed is, no matter what, and everything else is a mutt" and total backyard breeding anarchy? Sadly, local landraces have largely been replaced by breeds. So many landraces are gone now, because they didn't make it into a breed standard, and people would rather buy dogs originating from the other side of the planet.

that point would be breeding for function over looks. keep pedigrees, but instead of inbreeding to maintain a breeds 'look', you bred healthy unrelated dogs for function. function over appearance.

That's a good purpose for breeds. However, people already did that with landraces, which is why, for most dogs, breeds as they exist today are not strictly necessary.

Had no idea what landraces were, that's exactly function over looks. That's crazy to learn. Bring landraces back, get rid of inbreeding for appearance.

OP, you do realise that whippets are only there because people buy dogs that arent suitable, right? You seem to have some misplaced anger

Hey, it's unpopular opinion, I'mma go all out.

I think when people discuss that they're more talking about breeds who suffer for 'the look' like pugs or great danes. Dachshunds and a lot of bulldogs, too.

Completely agree. I especially hate seeing mutilation because that's the way the breed's "supposed to be".
