+20 If you decide to throw someone a surprise party, you can hope it goes well but you should expect them to be upset, amirite?

I feel like there might be more to this opinion, and I'm intrigued. TBH, I hate the idea of surprise parties, but I don't leave it to chance. I've told anyone who might ever want to throw me a surprise party to not every plan one, because I would hate it lol

Im the same, I hate when people interrupt my day for social occasions like a party or at a bar and everyone im friends with has heard something along the lines of "If you want to make plans with me, dont do it on the same day because ill probably be doing something already"

WTF kind of friends do you have?

We're not talking about random, unbiased surprises though, so they're irrelevant. A fun surprise is something I would define as 'an activity they would enjoy if it was not a surprise.' For some people, adding a surprise element to an activity they would normally enjoy makes it less fun, for others, it makes it more fun. The fact that you see a surprise element to an activity you enjoy as an obstacle to be overcome continues to says more about your personal feelings towards surprises than how everyone else perceives them.

the problem is that you are assuming that most people are as neurotic as you and your chronically online zoomer discord friends are which isn't the case

I agree, mostly. I think the caveat that makes them work is if the birthday boy/girl thinks they're meeting a small group for dinner etc. and—surprise—it's a much bigger group! This way they're prepared to be social and celebratory. Conversely, arriving home with no makeup, groceries in hand, fully unaware and two dozen friends are screaming at you is cringe.

My wife loves surprises. I don't. I told her never to do a surprise party for me.

Every surprise I planned seemed to not be a surprise. Someone always talks
