+24 SNL is not funny at all. amirite?

by Anonymous 3 days ago

The best SNL cast is when you were a teenager, and all casts since then have sucked.

by Wavamoore 3 days ago

Nope. 2008 cast was absolutely the best, when I was 30. I like the cast from my high school years, but as far as the skits go, what can I say, I'm a sucker for actually ending a sketch on a good punchline instead of letting it just peter out after the premise has been beaten into the ground.

by Muted_Camera 3 days ago

2011 was my favorite cast, and I was in high school for the Sandler years. This latest episode...oof.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

yep

by Anonymous 3 days ago

They say that, but this isn't true for me. My favorite casts were later, and I'm not sure I have 'one' favorite cast either.

by Hefty_Painting 3 days ago

This is definitely true for me

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Or when you were high on Saturday night.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Yes actually I was in my late teens through late 20s around that time! But that was the era of Will Farrell, Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, Ana Gaseyer, Cheri Oteri, etc. It was just so good…

by amarks 3 days ago

It definitely waxes and wanes.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I watched best of John Belushi and I enjoyed some skits like samurai delicatessen, but you're right, the humor is pretty dry from that era. My favorite seasons had Fred Armisted, Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

That was the peak "everything" years

by Ewald33 3 days ago

Yeah. I miss my skinny jeans, studded belt, cutoff gloves, scribbled-on Chucks...

by New-Ad788 3 days ago

Yeah. I love some of the skits they have but i find the majority to be a hit and a miss.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

About 10% is funny, but when it hits it hits. Weekend update is the only part I'll always watch.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Update is the only aspect of the show that's consistently strong, even the worst updates are still pretty good.

by qprosacco 3 days ago

I actually hate that part. I guess we all like something different.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Agreed. I genuinely like 90% of the SNL normal skits, but update does nothing for me.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Same

by AdMammoth 3 days ago

I think they have gotten better throughout the years. Might be the best SNL weekend update team ever, or maybe second after Norm Mcdonald.

by GarlicPossible 3 days ago

Tina and Jimmy. Seth and Amy.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

cold open and weekend update (minus when the guest comes on). That's all that's worth watching nowadays.

by Repulsive-Gold 3 days ago

i think the update guests are the best part of update

by Anonymous 3 days ago

There's actually some pretty decent digital stuff that gets cut and uploaded to YT every now & then. I also find the back half hour to be the funniest skits but maybe because they're naughtier than the first hour

by Pretend_Database 3 days ago

SNL is unique in that I've never seen another sketch comedy show that can have entire hour long episodes that don't make me laugh a single time, and another episode in the same season with a sketch so good that it's talked about for generations. It's also basically a segue show for anyone who isn't Keenan Thompson to get some exposure and then go do their own thing.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

The amt of bands who got their big break on their is wild. That music documentary was really cool

by barney00 3 days ago

I'm firmly in the "watch for weekend update and the occasional glorious more cowbell sketch" camp.

by Proof_Chapter 3 days ago

WU is an absolute must for me. And I always watch the musical performances. the sketches are maybe 55% good. I, probably like you, especially like the really messed up ones that get scheduled in the last quarter. Like the punk rock queen ones, More Cowbell...the weirder the better.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Feel the same way about Friends

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Friends is a terrible show

by Significant_View 3 days ago

You're supposed to read the whole sentence

by Lexusmaggio 3 days ago

Ugh I loathe Friends. I REALLY do not understand the appeal, and yes, I've had it explained to me several times by fans.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

My ex tried to get me into it and I just never saw the appeal or humour in it. No one is funny. They just come off as whiney or dumb and there's just no way I'm tuning in to that. And this is coming from a guy that found Freddy Got Fingered funny

by Anonymous 3 days ago

But isn't it hilarious that we get to watch this random person whinge about their relationship and whine about their job to their friend who isn't listening closely?!?! /s

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I never could relate to the show at all. I was a poor kid growing up in hardship really badly and I never watched one episode. I was completely detached from the lifestyle they lived. Anyways I know it's popular but I never ever saw it.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

And schitt's creek

by Anonymous 3 days ago

SNL is to comedy what Star Wars is to movies In the late 70s or early 80s? Man, you had to be there. It was so cool! Almost completely useless since, with the occasional moments of entertainment here and there but none worth their continual existence for so long.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

It was never funny, you just got older

by Heathcotedeange 3 days ago

Hmm. I dunno. To this day the old celebrity jeopardy episodes still crack me up.

by luisa85 3 days ago

Norm Macdonald is funny in spite of the show, not because of it

by Heathcotedeange 3 days ago

He used to be funny. It's like he's not even trying any more.

by Junior_Island_1839 3 days ago

The more I read about him, the less I'm convinced he's even alive

by gutkowskined 3 days ago

I didn't know he was sick

by Heathcotedeange 3 days ago

I loved Will Ferrell and Darryl Hammond in it as well. Anal bum covers…gets me every time.

by luisa85 3 days ago

Then why did it get funnier as I got older? What is this paradox?

by Hefty_Painting 3 days ago

This list is what then lol That was consistently good not just some nostalgic parts like Kids in The Hall

by Tromparlene 3 days ago

It is WAY too on the nose

by SystemEarly 3 days ago

SNL has not been funny since the days of Dana Carvey, Belushi, and Aykroyd. MAD TV in the 90's was really funny.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

One of those is not like other others.

by IndependentSky7661 3 days ago

I think your opinion is popular

by Anonymous 3 days ago

My wife and I are huge SNL fans and I'm always interested in this take. Definitely some skits are less funny than others, while some have me in stitches, and others are cringey at time. That's why we like it. Tuning in once a week, not knowing what we're gonna get, knowing it's live. We love the cast members and I can't imagine trying to write, produce, and act in a live show in the span of one week. Also for the people saying "it's been trash for 20 years" or "hasn't been funny since the 90s" …if you don't like, why are you watching it? And if you're not watching it, how do you know it's not funny?

by hillslessie 3 days ago

This is a pretty popular opinion, bud

by Big_Reward8898 3 days ago

Not unpopular at all. MadTV & In Living Color are the goats of sketch comedy

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Mad TV for the win. Stuart was the MVP.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Not American either but Che and Colin's joke swap are funny.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's been trash for like 20 years

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It definitely had its "heyday" but especially lately has more misses than hits. It's honestly better consumed with "Best of all time" compilations than watching an episode as it airs. The whole premise is celebrities who may or may not actually be good at comedy performing often hastily written bits to a live audience, which is obviously prone to bad performances. It's a celebrity club that's more for them than it is for us.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It really depends on the cast and the writers. I agree with someone said above it's like 10% but when it hits it hits.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This is not unpopular

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I've never watched a full episode of SNL, however, there are some very funny clips from it depending on your taste of course. You just have to cherry pick em

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Is this really unpopular? I see this being a common consensus in the internet, with only occasional funny moment.

by Ok_Anxiety 2 days ago

I just watch Jost and Che.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

SNL has a kind of learned humor which makes it funny to people who watch SNL on a regular basis and almost no one else

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Its not funny

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I love weekend update and anything with Keenan Thompson

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It has gone through phases when it was very funny. I haven't watched an episode in years though.

by Cute-Fold 2 days ago

I think they rely too heavily on parodies, and in my opinion parodies are an outdated form of comedy.

by Ambitious-Mouse 2 days ago

Peak SNL was the 70s to 90s. Then it just went downhill from there (at least based on clips I have seen for the past few years on youtube).

by zariawuckert 2 days ago

50 years "already" ?? Are you 90?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's not only gotten worse in absolute terms, but what really happened is that style of humor is just suuuper dated. That's in fact why it's been around for 50 years and is still around. The formula works extremely well for a few decades, and once it fell off, it had already become such an institution that noone is ready to let it go yet. I'd go even a step further and say like 99% of mainstream and even most niche comedy out there is just not actually funny, it's just all been done. The only things I find truly funny in life are like organic, real life things that you can't just write. And even that stuff is just like amusing funny, almost never belly-ache funny like things used to be.

by kozeyernestina 2 days ago

Every year people say this and every year enough people tune it to keep it going. It has the same vibe as the people that complain about the Super Bowl half time show. Some people don't like I love Lucy, or Will Ferrell or dead pool or larry the cable guy or Richard Pryor, and the list goes on and on. Comedy is unique to you. Plenty of comedy I don't like. I don't whine about it I just don't watch it.

by Routine-Meaning7636 2 days ago

Hasn't been for a long time now. Just barely hidden political biased and superficial edgy material pointed towards adolescents

by Icy-Classroom 2 days ago

I'm not an expert or anything but i tried to watch a lot of SNL and SNL movies and i find most of it very dated. I mean, we got Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy or Mike Myers thanks to SNL, which are great, but others like Chris Farley, Steve Martin or Chevy Chase are (for me) very mid actors who overract everything they do. The original cast (well, maybe outside Belushi) were very lucky to be there at the right time and the right place, i think. You're not wrong by saying that it's mostly "american" humor, which is very slapstick and exaggerated, something you have to grow up with i guess. It's not random that the ones i don't like are the one that are not well known outside US. But, i love Mel Brooks and ZAZ so maybe it's SNL by itself that is not my brand of humor.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I mean, it's meant to be current. Which means dated when you look back. But some of it really is funny as hell if you understand the moment.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's really not. I cringe every time someone puts it on the TV at a gathering

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Need Madtv back

by Living_Avocado 2 days ago

Thank you! I haven't found it funny in at least 30 years. I've never been able to find the appeal since the 80s. I just politely smile and nod when people reference it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This would've been so unpopular 30 years ago

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The show has its ups & downs. I'm American and I haven't really watched it in the last 10 years or so. My favorite periods of the show were probably around 1989-2014 or so.

by Right_Time 2 days ago

I let youtube show me which the popular skits are so I can watch those and skip all the slop

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I have never been outside the U.S. and I think the exact same thing. It sucks.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It used to be for latch key kids

by PlanePlenty 2 days ago

it used to be. but for the past ~10+ years its not anymore.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

SNL died when Will Ferrell left

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yup, defo more cringe than funny

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I love it. But objectively speaking, it's like 55% funny/good and the rest is less good but also only 2-4 minutes long. I liked KITH more, but SNL is the best show currently on of its kind.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

they do like 1-2 funny sketch a year, so it's best to wait for the decade roundup

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Morgan is that you?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It hasn't been the same since cocaine became unpopular

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Hasn't been for 20 years

by virginia65 2 days ago

You've noticed the cast changes every so often…?

by Impressive_Safety 2 days ago

Been like this from day 1.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It used to be funnier, but those days are gone now so get used to it or it's the gulag for you and your family for being so unamerican. Just kidding. I think.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

SNL has aged about as well as Alec Baldwin lmao

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Milquetoast take

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You're not wrong. It is pretty terrible now. When Alec Baldwin guest starred his Trump was pretty funny, and then the "Domingo" bit got a lot of airplay. Personally, I think SNL writers and oversight are too scared now to actually criticize anyone in power, or too censored by their bosses to do anything controversial or noteworthy anymore. Honestly, 50 years is a heck of a run.

by Darrin50 2 days ago

Its watered down internet sketches for mass audiences. I will say this: if it weren't so limited with what these sketches can do they would be wayyyyy funnier.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

How are we supposed to change your mind? You didn't find it funny, nothing we say is going to make it suddenly funny to you. Some sketches better than others, some casts/seasons better than others. It has its ups and downs

by barney00 2 days ago

You're not drunk enough

by Anonymous 2 days ago

There's some funny skits for sure. But there's some terrible performers. Kyle Mooney is just a charisma and comedy blackhole. Anything he is in you know is going to suck.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Some years it's better than others, but I generally enjoy it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Last night's episode was terrible, I'll give you that. It's been hit or miss this season.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Keeeeenan needs to be fired

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You just found out now?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The only thing to do is go on YouTube and search "best snl skits". If you actually watch the whole thing live, yeah, it's boring asF

by milo94 2 days ago

Agreed. I've never understood how it survives. I've never once laughed at a single SNL skit. They're never funny. I always hear the excuse "well they aren't all funny!" and no one ever actually says which ones we. Because they aren't.

by treutelemma 2 days ago

It's like 15-25% funny

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's not just uncommon it's incorrect!

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Just watch when they have good guest hosts like Chappelle, Eddie Murphy, bill burr ,.ect

by Anonymous 2 days ago

One very funny skit is the Gayle King and R Kelly interview, but yes I agree that most of the time... it isn't that funny

by ZestycloseSun3562 2 days ago

Weekend update is awesome still. I don't align myself with the conservative party, but I hate hate fat left liberals. And I still find their jokes funny as hell. Last night was epic lol

by FantasticTrade3979 2 days ago

The best I've heard it described is as your favorite sports team. They're gonna get good players, have good games, bad games, bad plays, great seasons, the stars will leave but it's how much you care to pay attention to it. SNL is great but not at all the time.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I agree. Even the supposed best sketches that people recommend aren't particularly good. I watched the George Washington sketch because people were talking about it and frankly it's just a couple of fairly hack jokes stretched over 5 minutes. On any half decent sketch show it'd be considered one of the worst sketches.

by Odd-Attention5802 2 days ago

You never saw Chris Farley and Adam Sandler in a gay beer commercial then.

by Henriboyle 2 days ago

I liked norm, hader and ferrell

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It hasn't been funny in 20 years

by Jedediah15 2 days ago

💯

by kristinjacobson 2 days ago

Overall it's been pretty brutal since like 2014

by Anonymous 2 days ago

People have been saying that since 1975.

by BatEnvironmental 2 days ago

It's just hasn't been good for more than a decade now. Too political and cringe humor

by Specialist_Car301 2 days ago

I can't stand the way they read off que cards. Like is it really that hard to act?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Don't watch it then.

by LiteratureHot 2 days ago

Even though Sad, Emo, Sugar, K and Fem Pop suck, they too make $$$.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The Cold Open often really is the highlight of the show.

by Charming_Flow_2770 2 days ago

Weekend update

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Sometimes, it's decently funny. Weekend update is always worth watching. But actively watching SNL in its entirety is not worth it.

by Western_Pumpkin6776 2 days ago

As Kenan said in the Pumpkins sketch - they can't all be winners.

by Greenfelderespe 2 days ago

Wooooo-weee. What up with that? What's up with that?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Overplayed sketch imo but it was pleasant to start with.

by Greenfelderespe 2 days ago

Jeopardy, family feud, weekend update and anything Chappelle. Other than that not missing much

by Abigale71 2 days ago

Hasn't been for years.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

"Not funny at all" is an extremely low bar. I hated Joe Rogan last Netflix special, but I still laughed twice during the hour that it lasted, which is very little but still is something.

by Agitated-Garage 2 days ago

But the sketches wouldn't even end on punchlines. They'd start funny, and then they'd just die out after beating you over the head with the premise a bunch of times.

by Muted_Camera 2 days ago

I guess that's why none of the cast ever did anything after

by SeaweedFamiliar3478 2 days ago

Who cares? I mean, I guess yeah some other casts have had bigger movie success later on. But I'm not watching the show to see future movie stars practicing. I'm watching in hopes of watching a funny sketch. And the sketches from that late "00s did that as good as or better than any of the others.

by Muted_Camera 2 days ago

I've been American my whole life, but SNL was funny back in the 70s and early 80s. After that, all the funny people left and it became more and more political, and less and less funny every season.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Really? I hated the classic era of the late 70s. Probably because Chevy Chase is a raging dick, and Belushi was an overactor.

by Anonymous 2 days ago
