Of course it's not a "rational" use of time, but not everything in life has to be. It's about showing support to others and expressing shared grief. Have you never grieved in your life? Never cried? Never felt a sense of loss that you felt you needed to express or share in some way? This is the same, just expressed in a way that you might not use. You're pretty cold-hearted if you can't see that as valuable.
