+27 It's fine to generalize, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You're saying don't count stereotypes as if those aren't the most common generalizations….

by Meagan15 2 weeks ago

I think they're saying that stereotypes are bad and generalizations of people aren't and that's the difference…. But there is no difference

by Meagan15 2 weeks ago

It's not 🤷🏻‍♀️ I haven't heard a stereotype in like 5 years… I have heard people say many random generalized sentences, that clearly did not mean all of those people.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I haven't heard a stereotype in like 5 years What's your ethnicity?

by batzelody 2 weeks ago

See is different than hear. I'm talking about someone saying "Asian people can't drive"

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Huh

by Meagan15 2 weeks ago

So you're just lying…. what do you mean you "haven't heard a stereotype"??? Unless you sit in a room alone and stare at a wall you most definitely have. What are some examples of generalizations that you think aren't stereotypes? Because most are.

by Meagan15 2 weeks ago

"People who like onions have bad breath"

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's stereotyping people who like onions btw

by Wrong_Quarter 2 weeks ago

Sure man

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It literally is tho….. generalization is almost synonymous with stereotype. You just have different feelings on the different words.

by Meagan15 2 weeks ago

Cool, don't be racist?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

bro isn't allowed outside time

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

So you're saying it's okay to say something like "Why do black people steal?"

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Ya, I mean it's a stupid question, and easy to research and applies to a wider audience, but yes.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You had me until the last sentence.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's just weird having to talk like a lawyer in court at all times. Everyone presses you on every small detail and uses it against you lol.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No for real. It's exhausting and people who expect it are honestly controlling (watch people jump in to defend themselves because they can't handle the generalization.)

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The irony that everyone seems to agree with the sentiment OP is expressing, yet MF everybody chooses to get hung up on the one detail which is the last line.

by Alive_Presence 2 weeks ago

It doesn't mean everyone 100% but what is the percentage threshold that is needed for the generalization to be acceptable? 75%? 50%? 10%?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not always. A good test for personality disorders is black and white thinking and people with them literally believe that all men or woman are one way because that's what they've experienced. It's ok to ask questions such as do you really mean all men? It's not ok to assume the worst and interject defensively like they're talking about you so I agree with that point.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's why I said ‘reading comprehension' lol

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I'm not sure why you've decided all stereotypes are meant to be negative. A stereotype is just a generalization about a specific group and not all stereotypes are inherently meant to harm. One of the most popular stereotypes I can think of is "Asians are good at math". "Italians like pasta", "black people are good at sports" None of these are inherently negative but are still all stereotypes.

by Salt_Ball 2 weeks ago

Even positive stereotypes can be harmful. One would think that Asians being good at math wouldn't be a bad stereotype, I mean, it's good if people think you're smart, right? The problem is, let's say you're an Asian who is not good at math, then you're suddenly "a failure to your race," or maybe you're not really that Asian. "So Xiao Wang, you're not acing your differential equations class? You must be stupid or something."

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yep 💯

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You really think the stereotype about black people being good at sports is a positive one? Really? A stereotype that reduces them to physical performance as entertainers for our amusement?

by Aware-Action 2 weeks ago

That's a good point I didn't think of that!

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

If you say you didn't think of this, and I said it's because you come from a lineage of idiots. Is that level of generalization ok?

by Sure_Homework 2 weeks ago

You are intentionally insulting me, that's wrong on different groups. Why do people feel the need to insult people on the internet? You must be very bored and lonely

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

no this is the internet, if I don't find that 10th doctor opinion to disagree with you then I have nothing to add

by Jewell98 2 weeks ago

What tf does that even mean, are you ok

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Relax man, he's agreeing with you

by Abject_Asparagus 2 weeks ago

People can express confusion as passionately as they want

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

9 out of 10 doctors think one thing but there's always some weird example where something doesn't apply but it often generally applies, as you said.

by Jewell98 2 weeks ago

Oh excellent yes

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You frame this as being about intelligence, but that's not really what it's about. It's a political/tribal issue, as well as an issue that people with high levels of empathy are concerned about, as well as people who are interested in virtue signaling. I would argue that your comprehension is the one that is lacking as you have failed to understand the nuances of why people are concerned about this.

by Strict-Cattle-1414 2 weeks ago

I understand the nuances, and I still think it's a bad hill to die on. It hurts the causes, and increases numbers of whataboutism.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is how the entire population over about the age of 30 was raised and it works just fine.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's fine to generalize generally...but not specifically. If you are talking about a group or region you can generalize, but not when talking about an individual.
