The people buying large amounts of cheap liquor are likely planning to binge drink and get trashed, which is IMO fairly trashy behavior. People buying expensive liquor are planning to enjoy it, savor it, maybe only get a buzz? Nah they're getting wasted too. Double standards. 🤷

Vodka is entirely about marketing.

by Pretend_Damage_8379 1 day ago

We've done a taste test. There's differences but IIRC the favorite among the group was Costco, or BJs. Vodka is usually a mixer for us, so those are our go to anyway.

BJ's and vodka sounds like a good time XD

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Definitely. And expensive!

by Significant-Fee-6071 1 day ago

Pretty sure costocos is made by grey goose no? Or was in the past.

I think that was always a myth. But the fact that anyone believed it says that they're close enough anyway

by No-Mastodon 1 day ago

Why would that be a myth? White labeling is incredibly common for a lot of brands to sell their brand as another stores generic brand. My mom's entire job is selling nestle products as generic versions for stores to use as their generic. And Costco has incredible reputation with distilleries and wineries so I personally wouldn't be surprised.

At this point, yeah. Throughout history, making somewhat drinkable vodka has been a difficult craft, but it's pretty much figured out now. Unless you want it to taste like slightly impure vodka for sentimental reasons, almost anyone can make very pure fusel free alcohol of arbitrary concentrations.

The difference is usually how bad the hangover is

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I don't see any fundamental difference between the guy snorting blow or the guy doing crack either though? the difference is between a high-functioning addict and low-functioning. A high-functioning addict can splurge on expensive drugs because they have income, a low-functioning addict buys the cheapest possible booze because they're spending their rent money

by mosciskiorrin 1 day ago

I drink alcohol (mainly cocktails, occasionally beer or wine) because I like the flavors. I buy mid-shelf liquor (~40-80). My consumption is very inconsistent fluctuating between 6-8/week and 0/2-4 weeks. You see this as no different than the guy on the corner doing crack?

Expensive liquor generally tastes better and does have a different buzz. Cheap stuff will get you sloppy drunk fast and give you a nasty hangover. I like to have an occasional drink, so I buy good booze. If your goal is to just get drunk, yeah… go for that big plastic jug. And say goodbye to your liver.

Which is why volume purchasing cheap booze is seen as trashy. Buying a handle of cheap booze is advertising that you are going for quantity not quality, and typically indicative of overconsumption.

It's not about the cost, it's about the taste. Often (but not always) the more expensive will taste better. So, if you're drinking for the experience of the way the alcoholic tastes, or how it tastes in your cocktails, versus just drinking to get drunk, that's the difference between trashy or not. If you're drinking to get drunk then it's trashy regardless of the price. However, most of the time there is no other reason for cheap alcohol. I suppose there could be random folks who like the taste, but that's not the norm.

From my experience working as a bartender when I was younger, it's really about the difference between drinking alcohol to enjoy it vs drinking solely to get drunk. Some of the cheap alcohols on shelves are truly awful and not an enjoyable experience to drink, so the only reason anyone would be buying them is to get drunk, or if they're an alcoholic, it's the cheapest way to get to their goal. For example I'll drink decent whiskey by sipping on it, and have maybe a glass or two at a time. That's because I genuinely enjoy it and not because I'm trying to get hammered every time I drink. Another side note is, anyone who's drank poor quality liquor vs quality liquor can tell you there's a difference in how it makes you feel, especially the next day. Having drank a lot of cheap liquor when I was younger, there are certain ones I'd never drink again.

With vodka specifically, there are narrow bands of distillation that produce a cleaner liquor with a specific flavor profile. (I drink vodka martinis, so it's really obvious.) Less specific, cheap distillation techniques produces a dirtier, more hangover-inducing product. So, in that sense, yes, more refined vodkas are less "trashy" than cheap vodkas. But yeah, getting hammered is mostly trashy no matter what you're drinking.

Only if you buy and drink amt the same volume

by Secret_Penalty4895 1 day ago

It's very much a difference in quality but you have to have an interest in alcohol.

You don't always drink to excess when drinking. I like a glass of whiskey occasionally while I'm gaming with friends or watching a show before going to bed. Cheap whiskey just... I can't just have a straight glass of that. It's... not smoothe. So I spend a bit more on mid tier stuff. I don't drink much, so $60 will last me most of a month. As far as whether people buy a lot of alcohol in cheap containers and how trashy it is, or whatever, I don't care what other people do. In college, if it was cheap enough, I absolutely would have bought a bunch of those and threw a party.
