-36 I hate saying "bless you" when someone sneezes. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Don't say it then.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

this is fine unless you get those weird people that make a point of you not saying it, as if you've somehow sleighted them

by Anonymous 1 day ago

My gf is one of these people. Not even Christian, but raised in a Christian household. She says I'm rude if I don't say it. I ask why I have to. "It's rude not to" she says. And we argue in circles until I give in

by Anonymous 1 day ago

you usually do something polite for others and their own perception of what they consider to be good manners, if your girlfriend thinks it would be polite of you do this one small gesture, why argue over it? thats what she thinks, you do these things for other people, not yourself

by Albertakrajcik 1 day ago

So say "gesundheit" instead.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, been there. They sneeze and look me dead in the eyes waiting for me to say anything.

by aufderharjarrod 1 day ago

My best friend intentionally acts overly offended when someone doesn't say it, and demands they do. It's genuinely funny

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I love telling people "Nah, no need for that hocus-pocus."

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You're not mad that the societal concept exists, you're mad because you're so weak willed you feel forced to do it when you're not. Just don't do it

by UnusualHovercraft764 1 day ago

I say, "sorry you sneezed"

by Leuschkemara 1 day ago

As a sneezer "bless you" annoys me

by Tate18 1 day ago

As a regular oxigen consumer, it does not annoy me

by Potential_Method_169 1 day ago

You are sooo good looking

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion since the most popular show ever did an entire episode on it 20+ yrs ago.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I should steal that joke.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Something so benign shouldn't trigger you so much...

by Anonymous 1 day ago

"Irritate" and "trigger" are two different things. It's an arbitrary saying that essentially means nothing.

by felipahermiston 1 day ago

Being annoyed by people saying "bless you" when someone sneezes is neither a popular or an unpopular opinion, it's something barely anyone cares about or thinks about.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Ah, so it's unpopular

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's neither unpopular nor popular, just irrelevant.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

People who throw around therapy buzzwords and terms for serious mental health conditions for everything come off as very ignorant and annoying. A trigger isn't a term you can use for everything you dislike. No Karen, getting the wrong sandwich did not give you PTSD.

by Former-Chocolate-155 1 day ago

It might have if she's nuts. Maybe she'll be talking about that sandwich in therapy for the rest of her life.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Well, calling someone nuts is arbitrary and kind of degrading. Karen has her own issues but I doubt the problem she has is flashbacks and is probably more personality disorder alligned. They wouldn't be talking about a sandwich for the rest of her life in therapy unless the therapist really sucks and just wants money.

by Former-Chocolate-155 1 day ago

Trigger is also a normal English word which means to distress someone. It was an English word first and a therapy buzzword later.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Doesn't look like you do though. They're saying it shouldn't "trigger" op, i.e distress op by the definition. There is nothing suggesting they mean the medical meaning of trigger. I don't even know why I have to write this.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Benign things never annoy you?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Are you trying to get your friends demon-possessed? Because this is how you get your friends demon-possessed.

by Right_Call7960 1 day ago

Exactly! I told my kid about the lore. It was originally said to keep demons out of the body. It's all about the history lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Then don't say it. People think it's polite but when I sneeze and no one says bless you I just don't care lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just say "you're sooo good looking" instead ;)

by IslandTotal6388 1 day ago

Then don't say it.

by Just-Ad-7156 1 day ago

Do you want demons to steal your soul? Because that's how you get it stolen.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Costs nothing to be nice. It's nice to not want demons to get anyone. OP sounds bitter over a nothingburger.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just don't do it then?

by vickykuvalis 1 day ago

Then don't, you won't be executed if you don't do it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Then just don't say it

by ustark 1 day ago

While I agree that it's kinda strange that sneezing being associated with blessing people is a bit odd, I kinda like it because it gives me an opportunity to openly wish blessings on people without anyone thinking I'm weird for it. You could also use Gesundheit which is German for "health".

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I always use that

by Dependent_Bag3886 1 day ago

Because sneezing was the first symptom of the bubonic pest.

by FlounderRich6116 1 day ago

I said "bless you" in the title because this is an English speaking website so I used the English equivalent, but I'm actually from a Spanish speaking community. I don't say "bless you," I say "salud." That also means health.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Its weird to say anything, idk why we do it at all.

by Hellerroel 1 day ago

If you don't want to say it, don't say it. I never have, and I never will.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Vise verca, for me - it's okay only with immediate family, but not with other people. In my language, there are two forms of this phrase, one for close people, and the other form is more polite (like can and could for requets in english), wich sounds unnatural for me..

by Effertzpolly 1 day ago

you know what else is annoying? people pretending to be offended when you sneeze around them. like, thanks, I don't need to same boring joke said to me repeatedly because I have allergies

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just don't say it. I haven't for years, sometimes I get dirty looks or someone will get pissy for a minute but they get over it.

by Particular_Elk 1 day ago

I remember my sister went away for like 6 months and came back to a house full of males who didn't say bless you after sneezing. She felt obligated to reinstate the task

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I never say bless you I just say "tissue?"

by Clarissalockman 1 day ago

Well, bless your heart.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

We say salut where I'm from, I've just become programmed to automatically say it. I don't even think about it.

by Additional_Kiwi 1 day ago

When say excuse you

by Careless_Bread 1 day ago

Don't do it. I don't, and to my knowledge, nobody has become possessed as a result.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I agree that it's silly. My way of dealing with this is by saying "bless you" for other things like coughing, farting, cracking their neck, or basically any loud noise the body makes. I get weird reactions but I find it funny.

by Virtual-Percentage 1 day ago

I don't understand why it's seen as rude to not say it, why is it polite to begin with? It doesn't make sense.

by ThisTurnip1489 1 day ago

Because everytime you sneeze the devil tries to steal your soul. You way bless you to counteract that and save the person. Mind you, none of that is true but it is what I was told by my sisters when I was a kid and it absolutely terrified me.

by Giuseppe05 1 day ago

Yeah that one is very tired at this point.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

At some point I dropped the "you", and a firm "bless!" from an adjoining room confuses people enough to forget about the religious undertone. Kinda ruined by the #bless movement tho

by Agile_Ad_8882 23 hours ago

just don't say it??

by Top-Village 23 hours ago

I'm not religious, I don't need to be "blessing" anyone. I ignore it or say "Gesundheit".

by blair90 23 hours ago

Haven't said it in years. Its an annoying catholic tradition yet everyone says it. If you sneeze. Curse you. Blow your nose better.

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

Try Gesundheit

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

A girl I used to work with would just say "nothing happens when you die" after somebody sneezed ik it's from a movie or somethin

by Front_Classroom 22 hours ago

Don't say anything. I don't. It's really weird anyway.

by Independent_Top_1831 22 hours ago

Say "gesundheit".

by Mlueilwitz 21 hours ago

It is kind of silly. If I'm in the mood I tend to say "Sorry, I'm not authorized to bless anyone" which usually gets a smile.

by Majestic-Win 21 hours ago

When I was a Christian I refused to do it for theological reasons. Now I don't say it out of habit, but will if someone asks me to.

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

I agree and I don't say it.

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

How is this an opinion though

by Maleficent_Tax 20 hours ago

I say it because it's respectful and I believe in God

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

How is it respectful?

by ThisTurnip1489 20 hours ago

It just is 😂🤷‍♂️

by Anonymous 19 hours ago

You don't even have an answer, question things sometimes instead of just accepting everything without explanation.

by ThisTurnip1489 19 hours ago

Ok 😂

by Anonymous 19 hours ago

Kk

by Anonymous 18 hours ago

I'm a fan of "Goes in tight!" When they say thank you, I say "Whale cum!"

by Anonymous 18 hours ago

Its origins date back at least to the days of the black plague when sneezing could be an early symptom. Saying ‘god bless you' was almost like a little prayer. Now it's just something to say as a politeness, to make social interaction more comfortable. Some cultures associated sneezing with evil spirits. Sneezing could either let them in or was the body's way of expelling them. Saying something like ‘god bless you' was advantageous. Personally, I love when we keep with harmless ancient traditions.

by Amber09 18 hours ago

I do it out of respect, but I'm in no way shape or form religious. Simply a kindness thing.
