+193 The media shouldn't talk about serial killers or mass killers at all. No name nothing. amirite?

this is a very popular opinion. there are actual campaigns and many media outlets have it in their policies to not have such details mentioned.

Not sure this is unpopular outside the people that consume "true crime". So many of those types seem totally detached from the fact that their "entertainment" was the worst day in the lives of a lot of people.

Whether you like it or not these things happen and will be talked about. Censoring it would be dumb.

Their name is a concrete fact of the case. What evidence do you have that mass killings would go down if the media didn't report their names? Please cite your sources.

I mean, learning about serial killers can definitely help you see the warning signs in people around you. It's kind of a know your enemy sort of thing.

Sounds like an excellent way to add extreme fuel to conspiracies and political opportunism any time a high profile murder event occurs.

I'm a fan of the Some Asshole approach, myself.

I don't think this would have even the slightest impact on the rate of these crimes. Even if you want to argue there are ppl that did it for literally NO other reason than some sense of infamy- due to the horrific nature of the crimes, they would still be known and talked about widely.
