I do get it - I have a digestive disorder and burping is an unfortunate part of that. I do think that you should be polite if you have to burp in public, but if one escapes by accident it shouldn't be a big deal. I mean, you're not purposely belching into the crowd. So long as someone isn't just doing it to be loud and gross, it really shouldn't be an issue.

You can also burp with your mouth closed and then release it. Sounds gross as I type it… but it eliminates the noise, for the sake of others, while letting you expel the gas.
